Willis Veldboom, 94, of Oostburg, passed away on Monday, December 24, 2012, at St. Nicholas Hospital in Sheboygan. Willis was born on August 8, 1918, in the Town of Wilson, son of Garret and Jennie (VerVelde) Veldboom. He attended Harmony School. Willis served in the US Navy during WW II. On October 8, 1947 he married Mildred Lensink Simmelink in Oostburg. Mildred passed away on November 1, 1998. Willis had various jobs throughout his lifetime and was employed as a custodian for Oostburg Public Schools for 13 years until his retirement in 1983. Willis was a member of First Reformed Church in Oostburg. Willis enjoyed gardening, golfing, playing his harmonica, attending the Pine Haven Men's Bible Study, visiting with friends, going out to eat, and playing cards. Willis is survived by his daughter, Donna DeBecker of Manitowoc; his two sons, Richard (Sharon)Veldboom of Sheboygan and Owen (Marie) Veldboom of Oostburg; one son-in-law, Richard DeZoute of Oostburg; 19 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Lucille Veldboom of Oostburg; a brother-in-law, Fritz Menzer of Sheboygan; and a dear friend, Lucille Weavers of Oostburg. Willis was preceded in death by his wife; two daughters, Judith (David) Wallner and Mary DeZoute; one son, James Veldboom; a grandson, Trent Veldboom; four sisters, Grace Menzer, Evelyn (Ray) Theune, Bertha (Leslie) DeZoute, and Jeannette (Ellsworth) Den Hollander; three brothers, John (Ella), Harry (Sarah), and Elmer Veldboom. Funeral services to celebrate Willis' life will be held at 1:30 pm on Thursday, December 27, 2012 at the First Reformed Church in Oostburg with Rev. Brian Taylor officiating. Burial and Military Honors will follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg on Wednesday from 4-7 pm, and on Thursday, at church, from 12:30 until the time of the service at 1:30 pm. A memorial fund has been established in Willis' name for the Oostburg American Legion and Pine Haven Christian Communities.
