William Mavis

William A." Bill" Mavis, 80, of Sheboygan Falls, passed away on Tuesday, June 25, 2013, at the Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice. Bill was born on September 11, 1932, in Sheboygan Falls, the son of William and Ruth (Amundson) Mavis. Bill graduated from Sheboygan Falls High School in 1951. On May 22, 1954, he married Betty Gannigan in Sheboygan. Bill worked at Bemis Mfg. for 43 years before his retirement in 1995. Bill was a lifelong member of Fountain Park United Methodist Church in Sheboygan where he served as usher. Bill was also a member of the Sheboygan Falls Lions Club, Bemis Quarter Century Club, Old Timers Baseball Club and refereed for the United Football League. Bill enjoyed, softball, baseball, football, NASCAR, fishing, hunting, traveling and spending time at the family cabin in Athelstane. Bill is survived by his wife of 59 years, Betty; one daughter, Karen (friend Tim Lisowe) Mavis: two sons, Robert (Vicki) Mavis and Randy (Kathy Wendt) Mavis, all of Sheboygan Falls; two granddaughters, Jennifer Mavis and Kelli (fiancé Jonathan Shuit) Mavis; five sisters-in-law, Elaine Mavis and Caroline Ribbens, both of Sheboygan, Doris (Glenn) Hammerschmidt, Beverly (Demo) VanEngen, Shirley (Del) Dassow, all of Sheboygan Falls; one brother-in-law, Leslie "Bush"( friend Arlene) Gannigan of Auburndale. Bill is also survived by nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Pat (Harold) Pfrang and Shirley (Melvin) Zahn; and one brother, Tom Mavis. A memorial service to celebrate Bill's life will be held at Fountain Park United Methodist Church in Sheboygan at 2 pm on Friday June 28, 2013 with the Rev. Thomas White officiating. Relatives and friends may gather at the church on Friday from 11 am until the time of the service at 2 pm. A memorial fund is being established in his name.
