Walter R. Yurk, 88, of Sheboygan, passed away peacefully at the Morningside Health Care Center in Sheboygan on Monday, April 25, 2011 and is now with his Lord and Savior. Walter was born on January 3, 1923 in Owosso, MI, the son of John and Anna (Becker) Yurk. Later he grew up in the Flint, MI area. Walter served his country in WW II for three years in the signal corps of the US Army. After his basic training he was sent to the Keystone Radio School in Pittsburgh, PA. He was then sent to Kunming, China, where his unit was attached to the Air Force, where he was a radio operator for the Flying Tigers and attained the rank of Techincal Staff Sergeant. He was married to Dorothy Dahmer on August 3, 1946 at Immanuel Evangelical Congregational Church in Sheboygan. They moved to Flint, MI for four years and then moved back to Sheboygan. Shortly, after that he started his own construction business, specializing in custom built homes. After 25 years he retired from his business and worked for Quasuis Bros. as Carpenter Foreman. Walter was a member of the First Reformed Church in Sheboygan Falls, where he served as Elder, alternate teacher for the Ambassadors Sunday School Class and served on the missions committee. He was also a member of the Carpenters Local 731. He loved to go fishing, especially to Canada and Horseshoe Lake for rainbow trout. He and his wife loved to travel and especially liked to visit our national parks, seeing God's beautiful creation. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be greatly missed by his family. Walter is survived by his wife of 64 years, Dorothy; two daughters, Dr. Linda (Ronald) Sokalski of Flat Rock, NC and Donna Herman of Sheboygan; two grandchildren, Brian (Stephanie) Herman of Sheboygan and Aaron (Amanda) Herman of Sheboygan Falls; five great-grandchildren, Ethan, Judah, Anna, Micah and Asher Herman; two sisters, Alvina Vander Schuur of Michigan and Clara (Ralph) Schneider of Michigan; one brother, Harold Yurk of Michigan. Walter is also survived by nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Walter was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Lydia, Leah and Ruth and brothers, John, Henry, Reinhold, William and Victor, granddaughter, Melissa Yurk, great-grandson, Quinn Herman and son-in-law, Milton Herman. A celebration of Walter's life will be held on Friday, April 29, 2011 at 7:00 pm at First Reformed Church at 527 Giddings Avenue in Sheboygan Falls with the Rev. Brad Veenendaal officiating. Entombment will take place in Garden Terrace Mausoleum in Sheboygan on Saturday morning. A time of visitation and support will be held at the church on Friday from 4:00 pm until the time of the service at 7:00 pm.
