Verna Oppeneer

Verna Eleanor Esther (Augustine) Oppeneer, 91, of Sheboygan and formerly of Hingham, passed away Monday, December 5, 2011, at the Golden Living Center in Sheboygan. Verna was born March 17, 1920, in Town of Lyndon to Frederick and Agnes (Bitter) Augustine, Sr. She was a 1938 graduate of Sheboygan Business College. On June 20, 1942, Verna married Eugene L. Oppeneer in Sheboygan. Eugene passed away on August 31, 2008. Verna was a member of the Hingham Reformed Church, where she sang in the choir. She was a 4-H leader for more than 25 years. Verna loved spending time with her family, writing letters to her friends, gardening, canning and freezing, doing crossword puzzles, and reading. Verna is survived by: two daughters, Kathy (Elwood) Wynveen of Sheboygan Falls, Carol (Keith ‘Skip') Van Driest of Oostburg; three sons, Ralph (Lynne) Oppeneer of Cascade, Mark (Faye) Oppeneer of Sheboygan Falls, Keith (Jackie) Oppeneer of Sheboygan; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Verna was preceded in death by her: parents; husband, Eugene; two sisters, Doris Thiel and Lois Rohde; one brother, Frederick Augustine, Jr. Funeral services to celebrate Verna's life will be at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, December 7, 2011, at the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg with Rev. Steven J. Bakker officiating. Inurnment will be in Hingham Cemetery at a later date. Relatives and friends may call from 4:00 pm until the time of the service Wednesday at the funeral home. A memorial fund is being established in Verna's name for the Alzheimer's Association.
