Shirley Stahl

Shirley Mae Stahl, 87, formerly of Sheboygan Falls, was called to heaven peacefully on December 10, 2013, at her home in Westminster Oaks Retirement Community in Tallahassee Florida. Shirley was born in Rice Lake, Wisconsin, on February 12, 1926, to George and Edna Williams. She graduated from college at the Sheboygan County Normal (Teachers) College in Sheboygan Falls, receiving her degree in Elementary Education. Shirley then became a school teacher in a one-room country schoolhouse where she began sharing her gifts of educating children of all ages. She married her husband, Col. Kenneth L. Stahl (US Army-Ret), of Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, and began a lifetime of being a military wife and performing civic duty. Shirley and Ken lived and served in cities across the United States, including: Ft. Sill, Oklahoma; Ft. McClellan, Alabama; Washington, D.C.; Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas; and Edgewood Arsenal, Maryland. Shirley and Ken also lived abroad in Sendai, Japan, and in Porton Down (near Salisbury), England. She and husband, Ken, finally retired in Tallahassee, Florida, in 1996. An avid reader, Shirley was a creative and gifted woman who enjoyed cross-stitching, baking, arts & crafts, and intricate cutout picture-making. No artistic project was too challenging for her; and this was an attribute to one of her most wonderful and endearing qualities, the quality of patience. Throughout her lifetime, Shirley remained active in many civic, religious, and charitable groups including several Officers' Wives Clubs, the American Red Cross, Meals-on-Wheels, Cub Scouts, and the Episcopal Church. Shirley was a soprano soloist in the Choir of St. Michael's and All Angels Episcopal Church in Anniston, Alabama. She was also a member of the Episcopal Women's Group and was a member of the Church Vestry. In Tallahassee, Shirley was a member of the St. John's Episcopal Church Women's Group, did classroom volunteering at the Kate Sullivan Elementary School, and taught adult reading and literacy. Shirley was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ken, and leaves behind a very large and extended family. She is survived by her loving brother, Jerry Williams and his wife, Lois, of Phoenix, Arizona, as well as their children, nieces Susan Williams and Nancy Williams-Musser, also of Phoenix. Shirley is also survived my four grown children: Lt. Col. Terry Stahl (US Army-Ret) and his wife, Gerry, of Huntington, Maryland; Daniel Stahl and his wife, Mila, of New Glarus; Julie Clinton and her husband, Douglas, of New Glarus; and Thomas W. Stahl, Esq., of Tallahassee, Florida. She was a devoted grandmother to her beautiful and much loved grandchildren: Sarah Stahl-Toomey, Esq., and her husband Chris Toomey; her great-grandson and great-granddaughter, Connor and Catherine Toomey, of Sudbury, Massachusetts; David Stahl and his new bride, Ariel, of Corralitos, California; granddaughters Georgia Stahl, of Asheville, North Carolina; Nora Stahl, of Studio City California; and their mother, Karen Ladzinski, of Asheville, NC. Shirley's legacy will live on in the lives of all of her family and friends as she touched so many with her gentle and kind ways. She loved life and considered every day on earth as a true and blessed gift. Her love of music, art, nature, charity and reading is part of her living legacy and is felt everyday by her entire family and friends. She was and will continue to be an inspiration to all that is good in this world...and this world will be a better, more beautiful one because of our dear Sweet Shirley Mae. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at St. Peter Episcopal Church in Sheboygan Falls on Saturday, April 19, 2014 at 10:30 am with Fr. Sam Nsengiyumva officiating. Burial will take place at Greenlawn Memorial Park in the Town of Sheboygan. Family and friends may gather at the Wenig Funeral Home in Sheboygan Falls on Saturday from 9:30 until the time of service at 10:30 am.
