Ruth Hoffmann, 98, of Oostburg died peacefully on Wednesday morning, November 20, 2013 at Pine Haven Christian Residential Home in Oostburg where she had resided for the past two years. Ruth was born on January 13, 1915 in the Town of Lyndon, the daughter of the late William and Henrietta (Mentink) Scholten. She attended Hingham School. On November 9, 1936, she married Elmer Hoffmann in Hingham. Elmer preceded her in death on August 30, 1980 following 43 years of marriage. Ruth was a devoted homemaker, wife, mother and grandmother. She and her husband owned and operated a dairy farm in the Town of Lima for many years. Ruth was a member of First Reformed Church in Oostburg where she was active in the Women's Guild, Young at Heart, and the bereavement committee. She was also a member of the Gibbsville Homemaker Club. Ruth enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, cooking, crocheting, and sewing. She and her sister-in-law, Edith Beisser, traveled to Germany to visit a nephew. Ruth is survived by a daughter, LaRae (John) VanderPlas of Green Lake; three sons, Wendell (Bev), Jack (Mary), and Darrell (Judy) Hoffmann, all of Oostburg; 14 grandchildren, Dean (Mary) VanderPlas, Deanna (Steve) Benish, Danelle (Steve) Phillips, Wendy (Ron) DenBoer, Boyd (Laura) Hoffmann, Tammy (Doug) Brusse, Brett (Laura) Hoffmann, Julie (Dan) Sonnentag, Nancy (Dan) Smits, Joel (Kass) Hoffmann, Kris (Tom) DeBruine, Karen (Kyle) Heuver, Jon (Erin) Hoffmann, Nathan (Sara) Hoffmann; 35 great grandchildren; and 2 great great grandaughters. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer; a grandson, Timothy Hoffmann; three sisters, Esther (Clarence) Lokker, Bernice (Andrew) Neerhof and Joyce (LeRoy) Reiter, A funeral to celebrate Ruth's life will take place at the First Reformed Church in Oostburg on Monday, November 25, at 10:30 am with the Rev. Brian Taylor officiating. Burial will take place at Sunrise Memorial Gardens in the Town of Wilson. Family and friends may gather at the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg on Sunday from 4-7 pm, and on Monday, at church from 9:30 until the time of the service at 10:30 am.
