Ruth Hanson

Ruth A. Hanson, 91, of Sheboygan, passed away on Thursday, February 10, 2011 at Columbus Colony in Westerville, OH where she had been residing for the last five months. Ruth was born on June 11, 1919 in Oshkosh, daughter of the late Gustave and Adeline (Wendt) Schmidt. She was a 1940 graduate of the Wisconsin School for the Deaf in Delavan. On July 30, 1941 she married H. James Hanson in Rhinelander. Hans preceded her in death on August 30, 1991. Ruth was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Sheboygan Falls. She was a member of the Madison Association of the Deaf, the Greater Milwaukee Association for the Deaf and the Sports Club. Ruth was the co-editor of the newspaper for the deaf and served as Secretary for the Wisconsin Assoc. for the Deaf. She was awarded the Golden Hands Award for her dedicated and exceptional service provided to the deaf community. Ruth enjoyed traveling, sewing, crafts, reading, camping, cooking and gardening. Ruth is survived by three daughters, Charlotte (Brian) McDermott of Wisconsin Rapids, Karen Nuoffer of Manitowoc and Mary (Robert) Denson of Sheboygan; two sons, James Eugene (Elaine) Hanson of Rhinelander, Stephen (Wendy) Hanson of Rockford, MN; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Hans, two sisters Theodora Mueller and Charlotte Arendt and two brothers Burton and George Schmidt. A memorial service will be held at 3 pm on Saturday, March, 5, 2011 at Faith United Methodist Church in Sheboygan Falls with the Rev. Don Drollinger officiating. Inurnment will take place in Wisconsin Memorial Park in Brookfield. Relatives and friends may call at the church on Saturday from 1-3 pm. A memorial fund has been established in Ruth's name for the Friends of St. Nicholas Hospital and the Sheboygan County Humane Society.
