Roger Smies

Roger H. Smies, 88, Oostburg, was taken home by his Lord and Savior on Monday, January 19, 2015 at Pine Haven Christian Home. Roger was born on May 16, 1926, in Oostburg to Lester and Anne (Roerdink) Smies. He was a graduate of Oostburg High School. On October 15, 1949, he married Lenore Huibgretse in Oostburg. Roger served his country in the United States Army during WWII from 1944-1946. In 1950 Roger formed a partnership of Oppeneer and Smies Construction. He worked as a carpenter for 42 years until his retirement in 1992. Roger was a member of First Christian Reformed Church in Oostburg, where he served as elder and deacon. He was also in the men's chorus, men's quartet and church choir. Roger served on the school board for both Oostburg Christian Grade School and Sheboygan Christian High School. He was a member of the Oostburg Kiwanis, Pine Haven Men's Chorus and volunteered with his wife for the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee on various occasions. Roger enjoyed woodworking, gardening, reading, camping and traveling. He loved telling stories about his travels, both domestic and international and spending time with family and friends. Roger is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lenore; one daughter, Lynn (David) TeWinkel of Oostburg; two sons, Jim (Julie) Smies of Granger, IN and Jeff (Susan) Smies of Sheboygan; nine grandchildren, Nathan (Rachel) TeWinkel, Zach (Heidi) TeWinkel, Jacob (Renee) TeWinkel, Hannah TeWinkel, Tony (Paige) Smies, Lily (Jake) Maguire, Cassandra (Mark) Elgersma, Valerie (Mike) Probst and Tyler (Cindy) Smies; eight great-grandchildren, Levi, Braden, Tyler, Lucas, Aidan, Grace, Ryleigh and Olivia; one brother, Glenn (Donna) Smies; two brother-in-laws, Harlan (Marge) Huibregtse and Mark (Mary) Huibregtse. Roger was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral Services to celebrate Roger's life will be on Thursday, January 22, 2015 at First Christian Reformed Church in Oostburg with Rev. Drew Zylstra officiating. Burial will be in Hartman Cemetery in the town of Wilson. Relatives and friends may greet the family at church on Thursday, January 22, 2015 from 5pm until the time of service at 7pm. A memorial fund has been established in Roger's name for Sheboygan County Christian High School.
