Roger W. Sandee, 71, of 29 Wisconsin Avenue, Cedar Grove, passed away unexpectedly on Monday morning, April 27, 2009 at the University Hospital in Madison. Roger was born on December 22, 1937 in Sheboygan, the son of the late Walter and Mabel (DeBruine) Sandee. Roger graduated from Oostburg High School in 1955 and received his BS in Social Studies from Central College in Pella, Iowa, and an MS in Education from the University of Iowa. Roger married the former Marilyn Meylink on August 16, 1957 in Cedar Grove. Roger was a social studies teacher, beginning his career in Springville, Iowa then devoting 34 years of service to the Cedar Grove-Belgium School District before his retirement in 2000. Roger also coached football for 36 years. While teaching, he worked summer jobs at the Larsen Canning Company and TenHaken Siding and Roofing Co. Following his retirement from teaching, he worked part-time at John Navis Custom Builders and the Kettle Lakes Coop in Cedar Grove. Roger was very civic and community minded with a strong sense of volunteerism, concern for others, and putting other people's needs ahead of his own. He was generous, patient, and kind. Roger enjoyed being with people, lived life to its fullest and had a wonderful sense of humor. Roger was an organ recipient. He was a member of the First Reformed Church in Cedar Grove where he served as a deacon, elder and usher. He served on numerous community boards, including the Village of Cedar Grove, and Eastern Shores Library. He was a Merit Badge Counselor for the Eagles Scouts. Roger also belonged to the Sheboygan County Retired Teachers Assoc, WEA and the NEA. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; one daughter, Michelle (James) Obbink of Cedar Grove; two sons, Jeffrey (Sandra) Sandee of Neenah and Joel (Pam) Sandee of Sheboygan; seven grandchildren, Travis, Justin and Brittany Obbink, Megan (Nick) Strube, Michael Sandee, Chad and Aaron Sandee; one sister, Delores Bruggink of Cedar Grove; and two brothers, Rev. LeRoy (Elvira) Sandee of Waupun, and Wayne (Carol) Sandee of Mankato, MN; and one sister-in-law, Helen (Dick) TerMaat of Grand Rapids, MI., nieces and nephews. Roger was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, an infant Susan Sandee, Dorothy (Gerald) Plopper and Marian (Norman) TenPas; a brother-in-law, Keith Bruggink, and a nephew, Allen TenPas. Funeral services will be held at the First Reformed Church in Cedar Grove on Thursday, April 30, 2009 at 1:30 pm with the Rev. Kent Van Hul officiating. Burial will take place at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg on Wednesday from 3-8 pm, and on Thursday, at church, from noon until the time of the service.
