Rodney Ostrander 66, of 821 Minnesota Avenue, Oostburg was freed from his earthly disability and illness to an eternal homecoming on Tuesday night, April 28, 2009. Rodney was born in Milwaukee County on February 13, 1943 and at age 3 moved to the State Centers for the Developmentally Disabled where he lived for the next 47 years. In June of 1995 he came to live with the Steve, Sue and Nathan Hendrikse Family in Oostburg. With his engaging smile and never ending love, Rodney instantly became a family member of the Hendrikse, Ledvina, and Adams families. He was welcomed into all family gatherings, Holidays and reunions and greatly enjoyed and looked forward to Sue's, Margie's and Gladys' great meals. Rodney loved Mexican and Italian food, going for car rides, and sitting with Family. He enjoyed spending days at the RCS Special Needs Program where staff and participants alike considered him a great friend. Rodney will be greatly missed by the Hendrikse and Ledvina Family, and Vince and Angela Adams. His warm touch, belly laughing, and those endearing eyes will never be forgotten. For a man who never was able to speak a word, he communicated his love and affection to all those who were fortunate enough to know him. The Hendrikses would like to thank all those who loved and supported Rodney over the past 15 years. We know your lives has been changed and touched because of his life. Cathy Ledvina has been his legal guardian, but has done much more than act as a guardian. We thank her for her love and support of Rodney. We wish to thank the staff of Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center, Dr. DeMaster, Dr. Kunkel, and Dr. Black for going the extra mile for Rodney. The staff at Sharon S. Richardson Hospice Center were outstanding in their care and compassion and we thank them deeply for making Rodney's last few days peaceful and comfortable. The congregation of the Oostburg First Christian Reformed Church has always supported individuals with disability and we thank them for that love and support. A service commemorating the great life of Rodney Ostrander will be held at the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg on Saturday, May 2nd. Visitation will be from 4-6pm with the service beginning at 6pm. Pastor Ben Johnson will lead the service. Burial will take place at Hingham Cemetery. Online condolences may be sent to www.wenigfuneralhome.com In lieu of flowers, memorials in Rodney's name can be made to the Tesoros de Dios "Treasures of God", a school for special needs children that provides instruction and physical therapy in Managua, Nicaragua. "But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not grow faint." Isaiah 40:31. The staff of the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg (920-564-2771) is serving the Hendrikse family.
