Robert A. Smies, 93, of Oostburg, went home to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Wednesday morning, March 20, 2013, at Pine Haven Christian Home in Sheboygan Falls. Robert was born on February 6, 1920, in the Town of Holland, son of Lewis and Tillie (Graven) Smies. He attended Lakeview School. On July 2, 1942, he married Josephine Otte in Sheboygan. Josephine passed away on July 25, 1996. Robert was employed as a leather cutting foreman for Lakeland Manufacturing for 42 years until his retirement in 1987. Robert was a member of Bethel Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Oostburg, where he served as an elder and Sunday school teacher. He was also a past member of First Christian Reformed Church in Sheboygan. Robert was active on the Sheboygan Christian School Board, the Sheboygan County Jail Ministry, the Kettle Moraine Prison Ministry, the National Association of Mental Health, the Sheboygan Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, and was a strong pro-life advocate. He enjoyed making concrete ornament figures, planting and grafting trees, hunting, raising beagle hounds and pigeons, and restoring Amsterdam Cemetery. Robert is survived by his two daughters, Sharon (Herbert) Lantinga of Grand Rapids, MI and Roberta Smies of Sheboygan; his two sons, Richard (Mary) Smies of Whitehall, MI and David (Deb) Smies of Grand Rapids, MI; one daughter-in-law, Joyce Smies of Oostburg; 20 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Corinne Smies of Sheboygan. Robert was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Josephine, his son, Ronald Smies, and two brothers, an infant, Lewis Jr. and Donald Smies. Funeral services to celebrate Robert's life will be held at 11 am on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at Bethel OPC in Oostburg with Rev. John Tinsley officiating. Burial will take place in Oostburg Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg on Friday from 4-8 pm, and on Saturday, at church, from 10 am until the time of the service at 11 am. A memorial fund has been established in Robert's name for Oostburg Christian School and Pro-Life of Wisconsin.
