Robert L. Nyhuis

Robert L. Nyhuis, 83, of Oostburg, passed away Tuesday morning, November 26, 2024 at Rocky Knoll in Plymouth. 

Robert was born December 18, 1940 in Sheboygan, the son of William and Rose (Bloemers) Nyhuis. He graduated from Oostburg High School in 1958 and went on to study at UW Oshkosh and UW Milwaukee. 

On June 29, 1963 he was united in marriage with Gloria Brethouwer in Oostburg. The couple celebrated 53 years together before her passing in 2017. On July 13, 2019 he was united in marriage with Sharon Vander Waal in Oostburg.

Robert worked as an Elementary School teacher in the Cascade and Plymouth Schools from 1960-1978. He and Gloria owned Nyhuis American Family Insurance Agency in Oostburg for 24 years. He retired in 2000.

Robert was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Oostburg where he served as a deacon, and the Forest Greater Parish First Presbyterian Church in Waubeno. He was a life member of the American Aeronautics Association, as well as the NRA, WEAC, NEA and Oostburg Rescue Squad. He also served on the Pine Haven Board over the last 4 years. An outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing, Robert also enjoyed photography, computers, cycling, traveling, building and flying model aviation and making memories at his cabin in Waubeno. 

Robert is survived by his wife Sharon; two daughters, Robin (Brian) Bruggink of Oostburg and Pamela (Timothy) Acker of Cross Plains; five grandchildren, Nicholas (Sarah) Bruggink, Megan (Matthew) Thomas, Lauren Bruggink and Alyssa and Tyler Acker; two great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Ruth Nyhuis of Oostburg, Linda (David) Haen of Appleton and Beth Ann Goetz (Keith) of Cleveland; brother-in-law Richard (Marilyn) Brethouwer of FL; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He is further survived by Sharon’s children and grandchildren. 

He is preceded in death by his wife Gloria, parents, sister Alicia (Robert) Meyer, brothers Kenneth, William (Judith) and James (Juleann) Nyhuis and brother-in-law Bruce Goetz. 

He will be laid to rest at Oostburg Cemetery beside Gloria.

A celebration of his life will take place at the First Presbyterian Church in Oostburg at 12:00PM noon on Friday, November 29, 2024 with Pastor Brett Daane officiating. The family will receive visitors at the church on Friday from 10:00AM-12:00PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to The Gathering Place and Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice.
