Robert Huibregtse

June 23, 1920 — August 23, 2017

Robert "Bob" C. Huibregtse passed away at the age of 97 on Wednesday, August 23, 2017 at Prairie Crossing in Sheboygan Falls, where he had been a resident for the past three years.  Bob was born on June 23, 1920 in rural Sheboygan County to Henry and Lena Van Sluys Huibregtse.  He grew up and attended school in Sheboygan Falls, then married Mildred Hinz on November 17, 1943.  The couple subsequently relocated to Florida, where Bob served as a member of the US Coast Guard during World War II.  Returning to Sheboygan Falls at the war's conclusion, he joined Verifine Dairy and was employed as a cheesemaker for 31 years.  Upon retirement, Bob and Mildred moved to Eagle River, Wisconsin, to enjoy life in the northwoods for 12 years, and then relocated to Sheboygan in 1989.  They were members of Ebenezer United Church of Christ in Sheboygan, and active in the local senior community while living first at Mapledale Senior Apartments, and since 2014 at Prairie Crossing.  Bob was an avid fisherman his entire life, an enthusiastic cyclist during his later years as he rode the streets of Sheboygan daily, and a long-standing fan of the Wisconsin Badgers and Green Bay Packers.Bob Huibregtse is survived by two sons, Dennis (Patricia) Huibregtse of Ann Arbor, Michigan; Gary Huibregtse (Katherine Edelblut) of Fort Collins, Colorado, a grandson, Robert James Huibregtse of Fort Collins, Colorado, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 72 years, Mildred Huibregtse, twin brother Roland (who died in infancy), older brothers Bill, Corneal, Peter, George, John, and Ed, sisters Jennie Halle, Kate Rauwerdink, and Lorena Schroeder.Bob lived a good life, making friends easily, enjoying any time spent with his family, and staying physically active well into his later years.  He possessed a remarkable memory, and was a source of historical information related to Sheboygan Falls and the surrounding county, as well as the Huibregtse family archive.  He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.A memorial service will be held at 11am on Friday, September 8, 2017 at Ebenezer United Church of Christ in Sheboygan. Family and friends may gather for a time of visitation from 10am until the time of service at 11am.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Sharon S, Richardson Hospice in the names of Robert and Mildred Huibregtse.  Special thanks are extended from Bob's family to special niece, Elaine Brill, who provided ongoing company, conversation, and homemade snacks in Bob's later years. We also acknowledge the extraordinary care and kindness shown to our dad by members of the Prairie Crossing staff and members of the Sharon S. Richardson Hospice system.  The Wenig Funeral Home of Sheboygan Falls (920-467-3431) is serving the Huibregtse family with arrangements.
