Richard J. Nyenhuis, 82, of Oostburg, went home to his Lord and Savior on Saturday morning, March 31, 2012 at his residence following a brief illness. Rich was born on April 7, 1929, in Oostburg, the son of Harry and Florence (Lemkuil) Nyenhuis. He was a 1947 graduate of Oostburg High School and served in the US Army from 1947-48. He married the late Verla Ongna on March 21, 1951, in Oostburg. Verla preceded Rich in death on December 4, 1995. Rich married Laverne (VanderWeele) Soerens on January 15, 1997 in Oostburg. Rich and Verla were co-owners of the Dutch Treat in Oostburg with Jerry and Ann Lammers for over nine years. He also worked for Armira Leather Co. and Ross Glove in Sheboygan for many years before his retirement in 1991. During his retirement, Rich was a courier for the Oostburg State Bank. Rich was a lifelong member of the First Reformed Church in Oostburg where he served as a deacon, elder, and Sunday School teacher. Rich sang in the choir for many years, served the church with the gift of discernment and participated in various mission projects and trips. He served on the Oostburg School Board for six years and the Oostburg Cemetery Association for over 57 years. He and Laverne were devoted volunteers for the Salvation Army. Rich enjoyed reading, golf, traveling, and playing cards with friends. Rich was a warm and caring individual with a generous spirit. He was a humble, down to earth guy, with a wealth of common sense. Rich is survived by his wife, Laverne of Oostburg; one daughter, Sherry (Mike) Basch of Sheboygan; two granddaughters, Leanna and Laura Basch; one sister, Nelvie (Ben) Herr of Oostburg; two step daughters, Beth (Rev. James) Kuiper of Freemont, MI, Bonnie (Dennis) Huenink of Oostburg; four step sons, Rev. Thomas (Cheryl) Soerens of Costa Rica, Dave (Jane) Soerens of Neenah, Michael (Sandy) Soerens of Oostburg, and James (Jessica) Soerens of Hamilton, MI; 20 step grandchildren; 14 step great grandchildren; six sisters-in-law, Audrey Nyenhuis of Oostburg, Beatrice Nyenhuis of Milwaukee, Sandy (Lee) Tenpas of Oostburg, Ginny TeBeest of NJ, Gertrude Gabrielse of Sheboygan Falls, and Beatrice VanderWeele of Sheboygan.. Rich was preceded in death by his first wife, Verla; an infant son, Larry Nyenhuis; three brothers, Audley, Robert (Helen), and Duane Nyenhuis; and one step great grandson, Carson Markus. A funeral to celebrate Rich's life will take place at the First Reformed Church in Oostburg on Wednesday, April 4 2012, at 6 pm with the Revs. Wayne DeVrou, Thomas Soerens, and James Kuiper officiating. Military Honors will follow the service. Burial will take place at the Oostburg Cemetery in the Town of Holland.
