Philip VanEss

Philip P. VanEss, 82, of Cedar Grove died peacefully on Sunday morning, October 9, 2016 while at the Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice Center in Sheboygan Falls. Phil was born on August 4, 1934 in the Town of Holland, the son of Henry and Elizabeth (Schreurs) VanEss. Phil graduated from Oostburg High School in 1952 and then entered the US Army where he served from 1954-56 and was stationed in Germany. Phil married Lois TerMaat on March 21, 1958 in Cedar Grove. Phil worked as a tinsmith at Grove Heating and Sheet Metal and E&R Plumbing before his retirement in 1991. Phil was a member of the First Reformed Church in Cedar Grove where he served as a deacon and janitor. He was also an active member of the VFW Post # 9156 in Sheboygan where he served on the funeral honors detail and was a frequent volunteer for the Friday night Fish Fries. Phil enjoyed fishing, traveling to many states including Alaska and Hawaii, sheet metal work and spending time up north with his family. He enjoyed his grandchildren's activities and was an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Brewers. Phil had a strong work ethic which he passed on to his children and grandchildren. Phil is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lois of Cedar Grove; one daughter Laura (Russell) Voss of Plymouth; twin sons, Dale (Jodi) VanEss of Cedar Grove and Mark (Jodi) VanEss of Cedar Grove; six grandsons, Tanner and Hunter Voss, Andrew, Alex, Aric and Brandon VanEss; one brother, Roger VanEss of Cedar Grove; three sisters-in-law, Beatrice VanEss of Plymouth, Leona (Dan) Theune of Cedar Grove and Laverne (Wayne) Opgenorth of Oostburg; one brother-in-law, Lloyd TerMaat of Cedar Grove; nieces and nephews. Phil was preceded in death by his sister, Alvina VanEss; two brothers, Irvin and Harvey (Gladys) VanEss; and two sisters-in-law, Sue VanEss and Carol TerMaat. A funeral to celebrate Phil's life will take place at the First Reformed Church in Cedar Grove on Thursday, October 13, 2016 at 6 pm with the Revs. Al Schut and Kent VantHul officiating. Military Honors will follow. Burial will take place at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Family and friends will gather at the church on Thursday from 2-6pm.
