Norman Mertes

Norman L. "Jiggs" Mertes, 80, of Sheboygan died at his home, with his family at his side on Saturday afternoon, September 14, 2013 following a 30 year battle with Parkinson Disease. Norman was born on March 24, 1933 in Oostburg, the son of the late Raymond and Elva (Glass) Mertes. He attended Oostburg Schools and served in the US Marines during the Korean Conflict. On October 22, 1955 he married Donna Schultz in Sheboygan. Donna preceded him in death on October 16, 1995. On May 10, 1997 he married Kim Black in Cedarburg. Norman was a sales manager for Sommers Auto in Mequon for over 30 years before his retirement in 1995. Norman was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sheboygan Falls, VFW Post 9156 in Sheboygan and the American Legion. He enjoyed woodworking, NASCAR, hunting, card playing and traveling. Norman is survived by his wife, Kim; three daughters, Barbara Mertes of Grafton, Cheryl Mertes of Grafton, Gail (Ron) Burchardt of Jackson; two sons, Michael (Diane) Mertes of Hingham, David (Carole "CJ") Mertes of Grafton; five grandchildren, Amanda, Sara, Kyle, Brandon, and Austin Mertes; one step daughter, Tiffany (Tom) Chamberlain of Plymouth; one step son, Tim (Frosina) Traver of Lutz, FL; five step grandchildren, Randy, Victoria, Madison, Colton, Abrianna; one sister, Gladys Sargent of Sheboygan; and two brothers, Gilbert (Virginia) Mertes of Sheboygan and Aaron (Shirley) Mertes of Sheboygan; two sisters-in-law, Kathy Mertes of Sheboygan Falls, and Louise Mertes of Sheboygan. Norman is also survived by Christy Mertes of Grafton. Norman was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, one sister, Irma (Richard) Janey; and two brothers, Jerome and Roland Mertes; a sister-in-law, Shirley (Morgan) Mertes; and a brother-in-law, Earl Sargent. A funeral to celebrate Norman's life will take place at the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg at 6 pm on Tuesday, September 17, 2013 with the Rev. Mark Janzen officiating. Military Honors will follow. Burial will take place at Zur Ruhe Cemetery in Cedarburg. Family and friends will gather at the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg on Tuesday from 3pm until the time of the service at 6 pm.
