Norbert Zurmond

Norbert G. "Pete" Zurmond, 86, of Oostburg died on Thursday night, April 7, 2016 at Pine Haven Covenant Home in Sheboygan Falls where he resided for the past nine months. Pete was born on May 25, 1929 in the Town of Holland, the only child of Peter and Bertha (Lammers) Zurmond. He graduated from Cedar Grove High School in 1947 and then attended UW-Sheboygan County Extension. Pete served in the US Army in Berlin during the Russian Blockade from 1948-50. On May 6, 1955 he married Patricia Lemkuil in Oostburg. Pete's work was primarily with traffic management at Richardson Bros., Chair City Motor Express and finally as terminal and sales manager for Berger Transfer and Storage. He retired in 1991. Pete was an active and devoted member of the First Reformed Church in Oostburg where he served as a deacon, elder, usher, Sunday School teacher, nursing home visitation program and served on various other committees. He was also a member of the Good News Prison Ministry, Gideon's International, and gave out many Bibles at Sheboygan County Detention Center and officiated at the Freedom On The Inside Sunday afternoon services for many years. Pete served as a volunteer firefighter with the Oostburg Fire Dept. for 26 years, where he also served as fire inspector. He was also involved with many historical projects including the Oostburg Historical Society. He was a presenter for many organizations in eastern Wisconsin about local and Indian history. He enjoyed collecting Indian artifacts, traveling, coin collecting and playing cards. Pete is survived by his wife of 60 years, Patricia; two daughters, Peggy (Brian) Free of Sheboygan and Patti (Tim) Marsho of Oshkosh; two sons, Brian (Wanda) Zurmond and Bruce (Jody) Zurmond, both of Oostburg; eight grandchildren, Allison and Stephanie Free, Lindsey (Eric) VerStraate, Peter, Christopher and Thomas Marsho, Travis (Sarah) Zurmond and Morgan Zurmond; one great granddaughter, Penelope Zurmond; one sister-in-law, LaMae Lemkuil of Oostburg; and two brothers-in-law, Richard "Chip" Lemkuil of Oostburg and Charles Bartelt of Sheboygan; nieces and nephews. Pete was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters-in-law, Lenore Lemkuil and Judy Bartelt. A memorial service to celebrate Pete's life will take place at the First Reformed Church in Oostburg on Saturday, April 16, 2016 at 3 pm with the Rev. Brian Taylor officiating. Inurnment will take place at the Oostburg Cemetery in the Town of Holland. Family and friends may call at the church on Saturday April 16, 2016 from 1 pm until the time of the service at 3pm.
