Meryl Mentink

Meryl G. Mentink, 82, 11 South First Street, Oostburg peacefully went home to his Lord on Friday afternoon, February 27, 2009 at his home with his family at his side. Meryl was born on January 9, 1927 in Oostburg, the son of the late Garret and Janet (Huibregtse) Mentink. He graduated from Oostburg High School in 1945. Meryl served in the US Navy from 1945-46 as a radar operator aboard the USS Duluth, USS Topeka, and the USS Atlanta. He served in the South Pacific and was involved in Okinawa and the invasion into Japan. Meryl was discharged on the afternoon of July 4th, 1946. On May 21, 1954 Meryl married the former Lorraine Schreurs in Cedar Grove. He moved his family to a farm that was purchased on Poodles Corner on which he resided and operated until 2006. He was a turbine operator for Wisconsin Power and Light Co. for over 20 years prior to his retirement in 1989. Previously he worked for the Sheboygan County Highway Dept and was a truck driver for Empire Petroleum. During his retirement years, Meryl and Lorraine transported motor homes throughout the whole nation for Morgan Drive Away. He was a lifelong member at the First Christian Reformed Church in Oostburg, taught Sunday School for over 25 years, served as Sunday School superintendent and usher and sang in the Men's Quartet. He was a charter member of the Pine Haven Men's Chorus. He enjoyed baseball, yard work, attending grandchildren's events and playing cards with friends. Meryl is survived by his wife, Lorraine; one daughter, Carol (Ron) Meinnert of Sheboygan Falls, two sons, Terry (Debra) Mentink and Tom (Carmella) Mentink, both of Oostburg; nine grandchildren, Eric (fiancé Samantha), Julie and Tyler Meinnert, Trevor (Katy), and TJ Mentink, Tabitha (Chris) Weavers, Tiffany (Paul) Bimmel, Tianna (Peter) Nyenhuis, Tamika (Kyle) McGranahan; five great grandchildren, Gabriel and Keyanna Mentink, Caden and Camren Weavers, Gage Bimmel; two brothers, Arvin Mentink of Sheboygan Falls and Norman (Faye) Mentink, of Oostburg; and two sisters-in-law, Mariette Schreurs and Pearl Hilbelink, both of Cedar Grove. Meryl was preceded in death by one sister, Lois Mentink; a brother, Robert Mentink, and a sister-in-law, Helen Mentink. Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Monday, March 2, 2009 at the First Christian Reformed Church in Oostburg with the Rev. Dr. Les Kuiper officiating. Burial and Military honors will follow at Union Cemetery in the Town of Holland. Friends may greet the family at the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg on Sunday, March 1, 2009 (TODAY) from 4-8 pm and on Monday, at church from 10 am until the time of the service at 11 am.
