Merlin "Butch" F. Schmitt, 72, of Sheboygan Falls, passed away on Monday, June 16, 2014, at his home. Butch was born on December 11, 1941, in Sheboygan, son of the late Norbert and Magdalen (Wifler) Schmitt. He was a 1959 graduate of Sheboygan Falls High School. Following high school, Butch served in the US Army. On April 24, 1982, Butch married Mary Beth Baenen in Green Bay. Butch worked as a salesman for Richardson Lumber Company for over 30 years until his retirement in 2006. Butch was a member of Blessed Trinity Parish in Sheboygan Falls. He served as a dedicated volunteer for St. Nicholas Home Health & Hospice, Sheboygan Falls Auxiliary Police, Meals on Wheels, and was currently Sheboygan County Veterans Memorial Treasurer. His hobbies included travel, playing cards, NASCAR, Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Brewers, and relaxing with his cat Maggie in his favorite La-Z-Boy. He also enjoyed listening to country western music, cutting the lawn, playing golf, and taking trips to Chester's Drive-In. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Mary Beth; two sisters, Mary Ann (Bernard) McCall of Green Bay, and Lorraine (Dick) Schaap of Sheboygan Falls; one brother, Ray (Lynn) Schmitt of Sheboygan Falls; 5 sisters-in-law, Jackie (Norb) Nooyen of Luxemburg, Susan (fiancé Michael) Puyleart of Green Bay, Joyce (Tim) Smith of DePere, Theresa (Kevin) Horton of Ontario, Canada, Donna Baenen of Manitowoc. 5 brothers-in-law, Harry (Cheryl) Baenen, Jim (Pat) Baenen, Dave (Carol) Baenen, Fritz (Pat) Baenen, Lloyd (Julie) Baenen, all of Green Bay. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Butch was preceded in death by his parents, Norbert and Magdalen Schmitt; and his parents-in-law Joseph and Verda Baenen. Family and friends will gather for a visitation at the Blessed Trinity Parish in Sheboygan Falls on Thursday, June 19th from 2pm until the time of Mass at 6pm. A Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate Butch's life will be held at 6pm on Thursday at Blessed Trinity Parish in Sheboygan Falls with Rev. Bob Lotz officiating. Burial and military honors will take place at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Sheboygan Falls. A memorial fund has been established in Butch's name for Meals on Wheels, St. Nicholas Home Health & Hospice, and the Sheboygan County Veterans Memorial.
