Marigene "Mary" Carpenter, 77, of Sheboygan, passed away on Friday, December 30, 2016, at Pine Haven Christian Home in Sheboygan Falls. Mary was born on May 25, 1939, in Sheboygan, daughter of Eugene and Marie (Maertz) Carpenter. She was a 1957 graduate of Sheboygan North High School. Mary graduated Sheboygan Co. Teacher College, Lakeland College, and received her Master's degree from Marian College. She was an English teacher at Sheboygan South High School for 30 years until her retirement in 2001. Mary was a member of Sheboygan Evangelical Free Church, where she was active in the Adult Bible Fellowship. She enjoyed crocheting, gardening, camping, canning, and reading. Mary is survived by her two daughters, Cindy (Terry) Mertzig of Sheboygan Falls and Betsy Wittrock of Sheboygan; her two sons, David (Susan ) Witt of Valders and Jon (Lori) Witt of Pella, IA; twelve grandchildren, Laura (Pierre) Jacquette, Michael Mertzig, Cassidy Mertzig, Elisha Wittrock, Katie (Justin) Wine, Sabrina Doxtator, Samantha Doxtator, Melissa (Jason) Rach, Victoria Witt, Leslie Occiano, and Emily and Eleanor Witt; twelve great-grandchildren; three sisters, Cheryl Anderson, Billie (John) Hochrein, and Connie Ystesund, all of Sheboygan, and many nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her parents. A funeral service to celebrate Mary's life will be held at 6:00 pm on Tuesday, January 3, 2017, at the Sheboygan Evangelical Free Church with Rev. Dr. Gary Hylander officiating. Burial will take place at Greendale Cemetery in Sheboygan. Relatives and friends may gather at the church from 3:00 pm until 5:45 pm. A memorial fund has been established in Mary's name. The staff of the Wenig Funeral Home of Sheboygan Falls (920-467-3431) is assisting Mary's family with arrangements.
