It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Linda Schwam Merkel, born in Sheboygan and a long time resident of Milwaukee’s North Shore. She passed away peacefully Wednesday, August 14, 2024 at St. Nicholas Hospital. She was 74 years old.
Born on January 19, 1950, to Harold and Hova (Shectman) Schwam, Linda was a proud graduate of Sheboygan North High School, class of 1968. She continued her academic journey, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts from UW-Milwaukee, which became the foundation for her lifelong artistic endeavors.
Linda was a woman of deep faith, actively participating in the Jewish community. She was a devoted member of Beth EL Synagogue and had previously been involved with the Jewish Federation in Milwaukee, finding strength and solace in her beliefs.
An artist at heart, Linda discovered her true passion in photography. Her work captured the essence of life’s most precious moments—whether through weddings, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, Landscapes or portrait photography. Her creativity knew no bounds, particularly evident in her project "Flowers of The Mind," where she combined her love for nature with her artistic vision. Her darkroom was her sanctuary, a place where she could unleash her imagination, and the serene landscapes of Door County served as her muse.
In 2001, Linda found her soulmate in Randall Merkel, and the two shared 19 beautiful years of marriage until his passing in 2020.
A cat lady at her core, Linda was blessed to have been the devoted mother of six amazing cats during her life. They brought her immense joy and companionship, further enriching her life with love and warmth.
Linda’s memory will be forever cherished by her children: Jamie Erlien, Joshua (Sara) Erlien, Jon (Nicole) Erlien, and Alexander Orlando (Chelsie); her beloved grandchildren Mike Majewski, Jasmine, Jesse, Jayden, and Ava Erlien; her sister Susie Brook; brother Brian (Sheri) Schwam; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. She is reunited in peace with her parents, brother Michael, and sister Vicki.
A private family memorial service will be held at a later date to honor Linda’s life and legacy.
Wenig Funeral Home – Sheboygan Falls (920-467-3431) is assisting the family with arrangements.
