Lewis Veldboom

Lewis Veldboom, 90, of Oostburg, passed away on Monday, September 26, 2011 at the Sheboygan Progressive Health Care Center. Lewis was born on May 10, 1921 in the Town of Wilson, the son of Henry and Lizzie (Klompenhouwer) Veldboom. He attended Harmony School in the Town of Wilson. Lewis proudly served in the US Army during World War II and was a recipient of the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, and numerous other citations and awards. On June 12, 1941 he married Wilma VerVelde in Oostburg. Lewis was the owner of Lewie's Shoe Store in Oostburg for over 35 years. Lewis was a lifelong member of First Christian Reformed Church in Oostburg where he served as deacon and elder. He was a member of the American Legion - Hartman Lammers Post where he served as past commander. He also served as Sheboygan County American Legion Vice Commander. Lewis was a member of the Oostburg Businessmen's Assoc. Lewis enjoyed woodworking, bowling, card playing, and playing his accordion, guitar and harmonica. He and Wilma enjoyed wintering in Florida for many years. Lewis is survived by his wife of 70 years, Wilma, also of Sheboygan Progressive Health Care Center; his daughter, Helen (David) Gabrielse of Oostburg; two sons, William Veldboom of Oostburg and Don (Betsy) Veldboom of Waynesboro, GA; daughter-in-law, Suzette Veldboom of Oostburg; 13 grandchildren; 2 step grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and 2 step great grandchildren; four sisters-in-law, Elda Veldboom of Plymouth, Jackie (Russ) Oudbier of Michigan; Eleanor (David) Wingert of Sheboygan Falls, Alice June VerVelde of Oostburg; a brother-in-law, Jerry (Betty) Veldboom of Sheboygan; nieces and nephews. Lewis was preceded in death by two sons, an infant and Eugene Veldboom, four sisters, Ruth (Howard) TeStroete, Wilma (Delmar) Claerbaut, Ida (Clarence) Theune and Alice (John) Lammers, five brothers, Herbert (Alice), Edwin (Elizabeth), Oscar, Raymond and Austin Veldboom; and one brother-in-law, Roly VerVelde. Funeral services to celebrate Lewis' life will be held on Friday, September 30, 2011, at 10:30 am at First Christian Reformed Church in Oostburg with the Rev. Ben Johnson officiating. Burial and Military Honors will take place at Union Cemetery in the Town of Holland. Relatives and friends may call at the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg on Thursday from 4-8 pm, and on Friday, at church, from 9:30 am until the time of the service at 10:30 am. A memorial fund has been established in Lewis' name for the American Legion Hartman Lammers Post and the Oostburg Community Educational Foundation.
