Leon C. Obbink, 88, of Cedar Grove, passed away on Wednesday, October 05, 2016 at Cedar Grove Gardens. Lee was born on January 8, 1928 in the town of Holland, a son of Harry and Henrietta (Simmelink) Obbink. On November 18, 1949 in the town of Lima, he married Ruth TenDolle. He was a lifelong member of Hingham Reformed Church, joining in 1945. He served as deacon and on the Task Force. Lee and Ruth farmed their entire life until retiring in 1995. After retirement Lee and Ruth enjoyed hiking and biking at the state parks, especially Kohler Andrae and Harrington Beach. They also liked to travel in beautiful Wisconsin. For the past several years they would spend a few weeks in Florida, enjoying time with family and friends who came for a visit. Lee enjoyed watching his grandchildren's sporting events, cross country, baseball, basketball, soccer, track and volleyball. In his spare time he liked to cash crop on his farm and help on their neighbors farm. Lee's true passion and hobby was farming. Lee is survived by his wife, Ruth; one daughter, Linda (Steven) Meinen; two sons, Daniel (Sally) Obbink and James (Michelle) Obbink; eight grandchildren, Jason (Clara) Meinen, Erin (Justin) Piper, Kari (Andy) Meinen, Jamie (Andy) Brill, Stephanie (Curtis) Warren, Travis, Justin and Brittany Obbink; six great grandchildren; two brothers, Wesley (Phyllis) Obbink and Harlan (Marge) Obbink; three sisters-in-law, Doris Oonk, Mary Dirkse, and Bonnie (Daniel) Belshan. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Lee was preceded in death by his parents, parents-in-law, Raymond and Alice TenDolle and two brothers-in-law, Carl Dirkse and Gilbert Oonk. A memorial fund is being established for the Cedar Grove First Responders and the Cedar Grove Fire Department in Lee's name. A funeral service to celebrate Lee's life will be held on Sunday, October 9, 2016 at 4pm at Hingham Reformed Church with Rev. Steven Bakker officiating. Burial will be at Hingham Cemetery. Relatives and friends may greet the family on Sunday, October 9, 2016 at Hingham Reformed Church from 2pm until the time of service at 4pm. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Cedar Grove Gardens and Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice for all the care and compassion that they gave to Lee.
