Leo Malin

After a very full life, Leo J. Malin, 93, of Sheboygan Falls and formerly of Kohler, departed this world for heaven on Thursday, April 21, 2016. He died peacefully at Pine Haven Christian Home with his daughter Barb at his side. Leo was born on November 14, 1922, in Thorp, WI, son of Thomas and Stella (Balcer) Malinowski. Leo graduated from Sheboygan Falls High School in 1940 (? Or 41) and worked at the Ambassador Hotel in Milwaukee prior to joining the service. Leo served in the US Army Air Corps gallantly during World War II as a navigator on C-47 aircrafts. During that time he was stationed all over the world including northern Africa and India. He parachuted out of two of these aircrafts when they were under attack by the Germans and Japanese. Leo left the service when the war ended in 1945 and went to work at Kohler Company. While working at the Kohler Company, Leo met Ursula Schumann of Sheboygan and the two were married on August 6, 1949. Over the course of 50 years of employment with Kohler Company, Leo was employed as a traffic manager, a starter on the golf courses and a hospitality driver. He was a member of the Kohler Quarter Century Club. A devout Catholic his entire life, Leo was a member of St. John Evangelist Catholic Church in Kohler, where he served as an usher, head usher and on the church council. He was a member of the Kohler Village Board and was active for many years in the state traffic manager association. Leo had a strong work ethic and enjoyed working but also enjoyed traveling, playing golf, listening to polka music, and telling jokes (as only Leo could tell them). Mainly, however, Leo got his greatest pleasure by spending time with his children and grandchildren. Leo is survived by his three daughters, Karen (Michael) Garfield of Nashville, TN, Barb (Robert) MacDonald of Fish Creek, and Mary Malin of Westwood, MA; his two sons, James (Sue) Malin of Renton, WA and Michael (Linda) Malin of Lake Villa, IL; five grandchildren, Megan (Michael) Mason, Lauren and Olivia MacDonald, and Jake and Brooke Dainis; and his sister-in-law, Beth (Steve) Evert of Branson, MO. Leo was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Ursula, his parents, his son, John Malin, infant son, Jeffrey Malin, one brother, Ed Malinowski, and two sisters, Jane (Brian) Hoerl and Louise (Lyle) Lawrence. A special thank you from the family to Dr. Richard Hancock, Aurora Hospice Care and especially all the staff at Pine Haven Christian Home for the outstanding care Leo received over the years. Their loving support and guidance helped make Leo's journey comfortable at every phase. A memorial service to celebrate Leo's life and his polka into heaven will be held at 4:00 pm on Friday, May 6, 2016, at the Wenig Funeral Home in Sheboygan Falls with Rev. Bob Lotz officiating. Friends may call at the Funeral home on Friday, May 6th from 2 pm until the time of the service. A private burial will take place at Woodland Cemetery in Kohler. Throughout his life, Leo generously contributed to a variety of Catholic Charities and those that wish to honor him may do so by contributing to Mary Knoll Sisters and The Alzheimer's Association.
