Lenore Smies

Lenore J. Smies, 87, of Oostburg, was taken home by her Lord and Savior on Tuesday morning, April 28, 2015, at Pine Haven Covenant Home in Sheboygan Falls. Lenore was born on October 15, 1927, in Oostburg, daughter of Harley and Marie (Van Sluys) Huibregtse. She was a 1945 graduate of Oostburg High School and attended Sheboygan Co. Normal School. On October 15, 1948, she married Roger H. Smies in Oostburg. Roger passed away on January 19, 2015. Lenore was employed as a store clerk at Mentink's IGA Foodliner for many years. In her early life she picked beans and corn at the canning factory and set pins at a bowling alley. Following her time at Mentink's IGA she worked as a nurse's aide at Pine Haven Christian Home. Lenore was a lifelong member of First Christian Reformed Church in Oostburg where she also participated in the Martha and Eunice Societies, served as a librarian and taught Sunday school. Lenore and Roger were volunteers with the CRWRC-World Renew and served numerous occasions in Houston, TX and Kentucky. Lenore was a volunteer at the Good As New Shop, Friendship Club, and Oostburg Christian School Circle. She enjoyed camping, cross country skiing, golf, bowling, reading, embroidery, bird watching, flowers, ceramics, gardening, cooking and baking. Lenore was a gracious hostess and enjoyed entertaining and hospitality. She and Roger traveled to all 50 states and abroad. They enjoyed their family and attending their activities. Lenore was a lifelong homemaker and took great satisfaction in being a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Lenore is survived by her daughter, Lynn (David) TeWinkel of Oostburg; her two sons, Jim (Julie) Smies of Granger, IN and Jeff (Susan) Smies of Sheboygan; nine grandchildren, Nathan (Rachel) TeWinkel, Zach (Heidi) TeWinkel, Jacob (Renee) TeWinkel, Hannah (fiancé Garret Klotzbuecher)TeWinkel, Tony (Paige) Smies, Lily (Jake) Maguire, Cassandra (Mark) Elgersma, Valerie (Mike) Probst, and Tyler (Cindy) Smies; nine great-grandchildren, Levi and Tessa Elgersma, Braden, Tyler, Lucas TeWinkel, Grace and Ryleigh Maguire, Aidan and Olivia Smies; two brothers, Harlan (Marge) Huibregtse of Port Washington and Mark (Mary) Huibregtse of Ballwin, MO; and one brother-in-law, Glenn (Donna) Smies of Oostburg. Lenore was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Roger, her parents, and an infant brother. Funeral services to celebrate Lenore's life will be at 7 pm on Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at the First Christian Reformed Church in Oostburg with Rev. Drew Zylstra officiating. Burial will be at the Hartman Cemetery in the Town of Wilson. Relatives and friends may greet the family at church on Tuesday from 4 pm until the time of the service at 7 pm. A memorial fund has been established in Lenore's name for Oostburg Christian School and Sheboygan Christian School. The Smies family would like to extend their deep gratitude to the staff and caregivers at the Pine Haven Covenant Home for the loving and dedicated care given to Lenore and their family.
