L. Don DuMez, 86, passed away peacefully Thursday, October 5, 2023 at Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice in Sheboygan Falls surrounded by his family. There is comfort knowing he is standing before his Savior, whole again.
Don was born August 19, 1937 in Sheboygan, the son of Bernard and Beatrice (Dirkse) DuMez. He grew up in Oostburg, graduating from Oostburg High School in 1955. He went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Air Force for 4 years.
On July 11, 1958, he married Mary Lou Harmelink at Gibbsville Reformed Church. The couple celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year.
For 41 years, Don worked as an installer repairman for Verizon (formerly GTE) in Random Lake. He retired in 2000, and later enjoyed working for Luedtke Electric and Oostburg Bank as a bank courier and maintenance specialist.
Don was a current member of Gibbsville Church, and former member of Oostburg Christian Reformed Church where he had been a Deacon, and helped with maintenance work. He was also a member of the Oostburg Fire Department, the Hartman Cemetery Board, the Oostburg Christian School Board, and the local Kiwanis where he helped with many events. He had a heart to serve others, and provided community service in numerous capacities over the years.
He was a family orientated person, and his family was his pride and joy. He enjoyed attending events for his children and grandchildren, and helping them with household projects. Throughout his life, he cherished time spent at Lake Michigan, especially the week shared with his family every summer. A car enthusiast, Don also loved working on his 1968 Buick Wildcat.
Don is survived by his wife Mary Lou and their children: Julie (Phil) Meyer, Debra DuMez (Douglas Schaefer), John (Julie) DuMez and Jeff (Jen) DuMez; grandchildren: Cassondra (Robbie) Pratt, Joe Meyer (Lauren Giese), Leah (fiancé Devin Bayer), Lucas and Jonathan Bischoff, Aaron (Katie), Kayla, Levi (fiancé Ashlyn Kolste), Lauren, Ben and Evelyn DuMez; great-grandchild Joanna DuMez; former son-in-law Christopher Bischoff; siblings: Jane (Duane) LeBreck and Sue (Art) Dulmes; sisters-in-law Vonnie DuMez, Jean DuMez, Darlene (Ron) Navis and Bonnie (Stan) Ramaker; brother-in-law Glenn (Luann) Harmelink; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Don is preceded in death by his parents, sister Marilyn (Keith) Brill, and brothers Duane and Michael DuMez.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00AM on Tuesday, October 10, 2023 at Gibbsville Church with full military honors to follow.
