Kenneth VerStraate

Kenneth W. VerStraate, 87, of Oostburg, passed away on Monday morning, September 23, 2013, at Meadow View Manor in Sheboygan, where he resided for the past few days. Kenneth was born on January 9, 1926, in Oostburg, son of John and Hattie (Oonk) VerStraate. He was a 1944 graduate of Oostburg High School. Kenneth served in the US Army during WWII from 1944-1946. On June 10, 1949, he married Johanna Riel in Waupun. Johanna passed away on August 1, 2007. Kenneth was employed as a mail clerk with Armira Leather in Sheboygan for many years until his retirement in 1986. Kenneth was a lifelong member of First Reformed Church in Oostburg, where he served as an elder, deacon, usher, and in Young at Heart. He delivered for Meals on Wheels for 14 years. Kenneth enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking, stamp collecting, card playing, traveling, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Kenneth is survived by his daughter, Sharon (Jim) Dekanich of Sheboygan Falls; his son Glenn (Shari) VerStraate of Howards Grove; six grandchildren, Matthew Dekanich, Kimberly (Dale) Porter, Angela (Clayton) Keller, and Laura and Eric VerStraate, and Jill (Brady) Mork; four great-grandchildren, Isaac, Grace, and Caleb Porter, and Ava VerStraate; one sister-in-law Haleta (Cliff) Otte of Sheboygan Falls, and two brothers-in-law, Will (Joyce) Riel of Waupun and Wally (Katherine) Riel of Waupun. Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 58 years, Johanna. Family and friends may gather at the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg from 5:00 pm until 6:00 pm on Wednesday, September 25, 2013. A private family funeral service with military honors will follow with Rev. Brian Taylor officiating. Burial will take place in Oostburg Cemetery in the Town of Holland. A memorial fund has been established in Kenneth's name for First Reformed Church in Oostburg, Meals on Wheels, and Friends of St. Nicholas Hospital.
