Kenneth Steele

February 17, 1938 — March 8, 2016

Kenneth Herschel Steele, 78, was called to his heavenly home on March 8th, 2016 at Countryside Manor in Sheboygan, Wisconsin after a battle with a long illness. Born on February 17, 1938 to James and Ella (Schettenhelm) Steele and raised in Detroit, MI, Ken graduated from Detroit's Southwestern High School in 1956. In 1958, he married the love of his life Barbara Behnke. Ken served his country for two years in the United States Army stationed at Ft. Knox, Kentucky. Following his discharge, Ken moved back to the city of Detroit. Ken will be remembered as a longtime sales representative of Flame Furnace. His outgoing personality not only allowed him to excel in his career, but also to build strong relationships with his co-workers. One of his joys in life was spending winters with Barb in Punta Gorda, Florida. Many memories were made with family and friends that will never be forgotten. He leaves behind his wife of 58 years Barbara (Behnke) Steele of Kohler; three sons: Rev. Robert and Julie (Narr) of Kohler, Thomas and Deborah (Kenjorski) Steele of Caledonia, Michigan, and Kenneth Michael Steele of Fort Wayne, Indiana; one daughter, Kimberly and Rev. Steven Woodfin of Birmingham, Michigan. He also leaves behind 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Ken is survived by his sister Janet Danz of Troy, MI; as well as six nieces and nephews. Ken was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson Daniel Robert Steele; and three great grandsons, Landon, Caleb and Daniel Johnson. Ken was a loving and devoted father and grandfather who shared his love of sports as well of the outdoors with all members of his family. Whether it was hunting, fishing, coaching, standing on the sidelines of athletic events, or in the audience of many musical performances, his presence was not only noticed but appreciated. Ken was a long standing member of Peace Lutheran Church in Warren, Michigan. His friendly and familiar face was often seen singing in the choir, as an usher for Sunday services or on the fairways of Maple Lane Golf course in the church's golf league. He volunteered his time to meet with the homebound members of the church as well as serving on many committees and boards to strengthen Peace's ministry within the community. A memorial service to celebrate Ken's life will take place at St. John's Lutheran Church 16339 14 Mile Rd. Fraser, Michigan on March 29, 2016 at 12:00 with visitation from 10:00 until the time of service.
