Josephine V. "Jo" Thurman, 86, of Sheboygan Falls died unexpectedly at her home on Friday, November 18, 2016. Jo was born on November 25, 1929 in Plymouth, the daughter of William E. and Hazel (DeZwarte) Dehn. Jo graduated from Plymouth High School in 1947, received her teaching certificate from Sheboygan County Normal School and then her Bachelor degree in education from Lakeland College. Jo was a 3rd grade teacher at the Oostburg Elementary School for about 20 years before her retirement in 1989. On July 17, 1954 she married Robert R. Thurman in Sheboygan Falls. He preceded her in death on October 11, 2003 following 49 years of marriage. Jo was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Waldo and the Sheboygan County Retired Teacher Assoc. She enjoyed reading, gardening, traveling, crossword puzzles, movies, and collecting owls, roosters and Boyd Bears. Jo is survived by one daughter, Melody (Mike) Lorge of Sheboygan Falls; two sons, Jeff (Barbara) Thurman of San Diego, CA and Dave (Melody) Thurman of Sheboygan Falls; two AFS daughters, Marisa (Claudio) Gargantini of Italy and Kayori (Hidenori) Goto of Japan; seven grandchildren, Ashley (Josh) Pantel, Carley Lorge, Chris (Alba) Thurman, Tom Thurman, Melissa (Jerret) Earley, Shandi (JT) Blum, and Dylan Thurman ; six AFS grandchildren, Stefano, Roberta, Erica, Leon, Rin, and Yuka; five great grandchildren; three sisters, Winnifred Moths, Beatrice (Joe) Fowler, Johanna Schneider, all of Green Bay; and one brother, Bernard (Sandra) Dehn of California. Jo was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; and two brothers-in-law, Norbert Schneider and Rueben Moths. A private family service will be held at the Chapel of Eternal Light in the Town of Sheboygan. A memorial fund is being established in her memory for the Heifer International Project.
