Jose Layton

Jose Layton, 62, of Sheboygan, passed away on Thursday, December 17, 2015, at Aurora Sheboygan Medical Center. Jose was born on July 31, 1953, in Laredo, TX, the son of Benigno and Porfiria (Ornelas) Layton. He attended Sheboygan South High School and served in the US Navy from 1974-75. On June 30, 1979 he married Cheryl Behr in Sheboygan. Jose was a caregiver at Azura Memory Care in Sheboygan up until his retirement in October. Previously Jose was an alcohol and drug abuse counselor in Milwaukee for 12 years. Jose was a member of the Pentecostals of Sheboygan County and the Christian Intervention Program. He was an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers and enjoyed music, dancing, playing cards, and pool. Jose cherished any time that he could spend with his family. Jose is survived by his wife of 36 years, Cheri of Sheboygan; three daughters, Dawn (Johnny) Nix of Milwaukee, Angie (Tim) McNeil of Manitowoc, and Shelby (David) McPeak of Sheboygan; two sons, Antonio (Michelle) Layton of Sheboygan and Joseph Layton of Sheboygan; four grandsons, Micah and Riley McNeil, AJ and Brock Layton; three brothers, Victor (Consuelo) Layton of Laredo, TX, Macedonio Layton of Laredo, TX, and Jesus Chuy (Charita) Layton of Sheboygan; and two sisters-in-law, Naomi Layton of Laredo, TX and Marguerita Layton, of Fresno, CA. Jose was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Maria Elizabeth (Francisco Jr) Lozano; three brothers, Juan (Maria), Benigno JR, and Andres Layton; his parents-in-law, DeLyle and Virginia Behr; and a sister-in-law, Linda Cardenas. A memorial service to celebrate Jose's life will be held at 7 pm on Tuesday, December 22, 2015, at the Pentecostal Church of Sheboygan County with Rev. John Putnam officiating. Relatives and friends may gather at the church on Tuesday from 5-7 pm. A memorial fund has been established in Jose's name.
