John Swart

John E. Swart, 98, of Hingham passed away on Sunday, March 8, 2015 at Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice in Sheboygan Falls. John was born on May 2, 1916 in DeMotte, IN to Rev. Peter and Mary (DeYoung) Swart. He graduated in 1934 from DeMotte High School. On February 28, 1941 John married Alda Rauwerdink. She preceded him in death on April 1, 2002. John was a carpenter for the majority of his life and worked many years for Jos Schmitt Construction Company. John was a member of the Hingham Reformed Church where he served as an elder, trumpeter, custodian and served on the building committee. John also designed the current church. After their retirement, John and Alda went on many mission trips that they enjoyed immensely. He was a member of the Sheboygan Municipal Band. John enjoyed building and repairing clocks, listening to music, playing pool, deer hunting up north and traveling. John is survived by his two daughters, Ann (Dale) TenPas of Hingham and Janice (Gary) TenHaken of Sheboygan Falls; three sons, John A. (Jacqueline) Swart of Town of Holland, Peter (Colleen) Swart of Oostburg and James (Vicki) Swart of Oostburg; nineteen grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Mildred Rauwerdink of Sheboygan Falls. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. John was preceded in death by his wife, Alda, one daughter, Alice, two sisters, Martha (Arthur) Koskamp and Jeanette (Everett) Harmeling and one brother, William (Elizabeth) Swart. A funeral service to celebrate John's life will be on Thursday, March 12, 2015 at 11am at the Hingham Reformed Church with Rev. Steven Bakker officiating. Burial will take place at the Hingham Cemetery. Relatives and friends may greet the family on Wednesday, March 11, 2015 from 4-8pm at the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg and again on Thursday, March 12, 2015 at the church from 10am until the time of service at 11am. A memorial fund for Hingham Reformed Church in John's name is being established.
