John W. Nyenhuis, 79, of 1023 Wisconsin Avenue, Oostburg, died early on Thursday morning, September 3, 2009 at Cedar Grove Gardens. John was born on September 22, 1929 in Cedar Grove, the son of the late Benjamin and Madeline (Kolste) Nyenhuis. He was a 1947 graduate of Cedar Grove High School. On November 10, 1950, he married Joyce DeYoung in Oostburg. John served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict from 1951-1953. John was employed at the Belgium Foundry for 29 years until his retirement in 1993. John was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Oostburg, Oostburg American Legion Post # 286, Hartman Cemetery Board and served as its sexton, Pine Haven Christian Home Board and the Men's Chorus, Oostburg Christian School Board, Oostburg Village Board, Oostburg Men's Bowling and Golf Leagues, Oostburg Volunteer Fire Dept and the Jaycees. He was also a WIAA official, enjoyed cutting grass, and spending mornings having coffee with his friends at the Knotty Pine. He cherished the time he could spend with his family. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mary Jo (Gary) Velier of Oostburg, and Cheri (Jeff) Gahagan of Sheboygan; two sons, Bruce "Ed" (Sue) Nyenhuis and Brian (Debbie) Nyenhuis, both of Oostburg; eight grandchildren, Jennifer (Francisco) Verduzco, Kimberly (Forrest) Gibeault, Tracy (Randy) Johannsen, Jeremy (Shelly) Nyenhuis, Melissa Nyenhuis, Rebekah (Nick) Mueller, Peter (Tianna) Nyenhuis, and Tom Nyenhuis; eight great grandchildren; one sister, Pearl Janisse of Sheboygan; a step brother, Rich (Nanette) Neerhof of Oostburg; a sister-in-law, Virginia (Richard) VanStelle of Centennial, CO; and a brother-in-law, Jack (Shirley) DeYoung of Madison. John was preceded in death by an infant grandson, an infant brother, Robert Nyenhuis; a half brother, Roger Claerbout; a brother-in-law, Donald Janisse; his parents; and his step parents, Henry and Dorothy Claerbout. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 5, 2009 at 10 am, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Oostburg with the Rev. Ben Johnson officiating. A family service will precede at 9:45 am in the fellowship hall. Burial will take place at Hartman Cemetery in the Town of Wilson. Friends may call at the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg on Friday (TODAY) from 4-8 pm, and on Saturday, at church, from 9 am until the time of the family service at 9:45 am. A memorial fund has been established in his name for the Oostburg Christian School and the Pine Haven Christian Home.
