John H. Damkot, 84, of 112 North 15th Street, Oostburg died on Sunday morning, February 27, 2011 at Pine Haven Christian Home where he had resided the past three days. John was born on August 7, 1926, in the Town of Lima, the son of the late John H. Sr. and Ella (TeLindert) Damkot. John graduated from Oostburg High School in 1944. On June 4, 1948, he married the late Vernabelle DeSmith in Cedar Grove. She preceded him in death in January 10, 1968. On December 6, 1968, John married Edith Veenendaal in Gibbsville. John was a farmer in the Town of Lima, drove fuel truck for the Coop in Cedar Grove, and also worked at Gilson Mfg., Ongna Wood Products, Dutchland Plastics and Wickes Lumber Co. John was a lifelong member at the Gibbsville Reformed Church where he served as a deacon and elder, and with the video ministry. He enjoyed woodworking, building toy barns and other items, motorcycles, and playing cards. He and Edee enjoyed spending time riding their bicycles and scooters. He is survived by his wife, Edith of Oostburg; a son-in-law, Mark (Debbie) Hopeman of Cedar Grove; four grandchildren, Kevin (Tanya), Daniel (Traci), Michelle, and Jason (Jeni) Hopeman; four great grandchildren, Natalie, Austin, Madelyn, and Noah Hopeman; one sister, Edith VerGowe of Pine Haven; three sisters-in-law, Carol (Roland) Jensema of Oostburg, Mert (Wayne) Reimes of Gibbsville, and Beverly (Dennis) Diener of Oostburg; and one brother-in-law, Don Veenendaal of Cedar Grove. John was preceded in death by his first wife, Vernabelle; a daughter, Phyllis Hopeman; a granddaughter, Amy Hopeman; a great grandson, Parker Hopeman; two step brothers, Cliff (Lillian) Damkot and William (Dorothy) Mentink; and a brother-in-law, Ellsworth VerGowe. A funeral service will be held at the Gibbsville Reformed Church on Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at 11 am with the Rev. John Ornee officiating. Burial will take place at the Union Cemetery in the Town of Holland. Friends may call at the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg on Tuesday from 4-8 pm, and on Wednesday, at church, from 10 am until the time of the service at 11 am.
