Joan Verhelst

Joan M. Verhelst, 89, of Cottage Grove, passed away on Friday, March 15, 2013 at Kindred Hearts in Cottage Grove. Joan was born on December 3, 1922, in Sheboygan, daughter of Edward and Johanna (Cevaal) Dekker. She was a 1941 graduate of Sheboygan North High School. On September 21, 1944, she married Carroll Verhelst in Rapid City, SD. Carroll passed away on June 16, 2011. Joan was a member of Portage Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed bowling, bridge, cooking, gardening, and knitting. Joan is survived by her two sons, Bruce Verhelst and Brad (friend Patti) Verhelst, both of Madison; two grandchildren, Heather (Kelly) Peterson and Heidi (Craig) Zell; six great-grandchildren; four sisters, Janet (Chris) Vande Gutche of Grandville, MI, Lois Potter of Sheboygan, Edyth Good of Naples, FL, Carla (Curtis) Walzer of Clearwater, FL; two brothers, Jim Dekker of Sheboygan and Edward (Jackie) Dekker of Naples, FL; three sisters-in-law, Estelle Harmeling and Phyllis Christian, both of Oostburg, and Carol Dekker of Sheboygan; and brother-in-law, Jack (Tanya) Verhelst of Oostburg Joan was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Carroll; her infant son, Rodney; a sister, Doris Roth; and brother, Bob Dekker. Funeral services to celebrate Joan's life will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg with Rev. Brian Jacobson officiating. Burial will take place in Hartman Cemetery in the Town of Wilson. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 10 am until the time of the service. A memorial fund has been established in Joan's name for Hartman Cemetery Association.
