Joan Stokdyk

Joan G. Stokdyk, 89, of Oostburg, passed away on Monday night, June 6, 2016, at Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center. Joan was born on March 6, 1927, in the Town of Holland, daughter of Ernest and Cornelia (Smies) Onnink. She was a 1944 graduate of Oostburg High School. On August 29, 1947, she married Leland R. Stokdyk in the Town of Holland. Leland passed away on July 29, 1988. Joan was a member of Bethel Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Oostburg where she was active in the Rebekah Society and Encore. She enjoyed embroidery, crafts, sewing, cooking, playing the piano, babysitting her grandchildren, and her cat, Kitty. Joan is survived by her two daughters, Julie (Glenn) Peterson of Oostburg and Susan (Lee) Derus of Sheboygan Falls; her two sons, Jack (Ruth Helen) Stokdyk of Oostburg and Daniel Stokdyk of Oostburg; eleven grandchildren, Amy (Thomas) Straley, Richard (Kourtney) Peterson, David (fiancé Brittany) Derus, Steven Derus, Jonathan (Amy), Jamison ( Julie), Jeremiah, Joshua (Stacy), Timothy (Gail), Joel (Jodi), and Jesse Stokdyk; 14 great-grandchildren; one brother, James (Arenda) Onnink of Oostburg; and one brother-in-law, Kenneth (Melanie) Stokdyk of Sheboygan Falls. Joan was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Leland, her parents, and her brother, Richard Onnink. Funeral services to celebrate Joan's life will be held at 11 am on Saturday, June 11, 2016 at Bethel OPC in Oostburg with Rev. David Veldhorst officiating. Burial will take place at Oostburg Cemetery in the Town of Holland. Relatives and friends may gather at the Wenig Funeral Home is Oostburg on Friday, from 4-7 pm and on Saturday, at church, from 10-11am. A memorial fund has been established in Joan's name for Pine Haven Christian Communities and Bethel OPC.
