Jerome Shank

Jerome "Jerry" H. Shank, 85, of Sheboygan Falls, passed away on Sunday, July 29, 2012 at his home. Jerry was born on August 5, 1926, in Fond du Lac WI, the son of Clarence and Laura (Averbeck) Shank. Jerry graduated from Goodrich High School in 1944. He entered the U.S. Army and served from 1944-1946 in World War II. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, graduating in 1950. Jerry was recalled into the Army and served from 1950-1954 during the Korean Conflict. On August 28, 1948, he married Helen Sullivan at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Fond du Lac, WI. Jerry worked at Hardware Mutual Insurance Company (Sentry Insurance Company) and Sheboygan County Welfare Dept. He opened the Catholic Social Services offices in Sheboygan, Plymouth, and Fond du Lac. Jerry also worked at Forward Services of Sheboygan, retiring in 1989. Jerry was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sheboygan Falls, where he served on the Parish Council and was an usher. Jerry currently was a member of St. John Evangelist Catholic Church in Kohler. Jerry was active in Boy Scouts in his youth and as an adult leader. He enjoyed camping with his family and friends, reading, playing cards, working with mosaics, gardening, and woodworking. Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Helen; two daughters, Christine (David) Papke of Hokah, MN, Kathleen Shank of Sheboygan Falls; three sons, Michael (Jacque) Shank of Lyons CO, Kevin (Laura) Shank of Sheboygan, Stephen (Misuk) Shank of Fort Riley, KS and Afghanistan; and one foster-daughter, Lorraine (Glenn) Gross of Sheboygan; 11 grandchildren, Mary Beth (Matt) Moore, Amy (Terry) Atwood, Joshua (Anne) VandeBerg, Sarah Papke, Stephen Papke, Jack Papke, Jessica (Mike) Shank Coppom, Jamie Shank, Michelle Shank, Ariana and Aidan Shank; four great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter; and one sister, Beverly (Jim) Sullivan. A Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate Jerry's life will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 4, 2012 at St. John Evangelist Catholic Church in Kohler with Rev. Bob Lotz officiating. Entombment will be in Garden of Peace Mausoleum, Greenlawn Memorial Park, with full military honors. Relatives and friends may greet Jerry's family at the church on Saturday, August 4, 2012 from 9:00 am until the time of Mass. A memorial fund has been established in Jerry's name.
