Jean Schaap

Jean H. Schaap, 94, of Oostburg, passed away on Monday, November 18, 2013, at Pine Haven Christian Home in Oostburg. Jean was born on November 28, 1918, in Oostburg, daughter of Harry H. and Mabel (Hartman) Dirkse. She was a 1936 graduate of Oostburg High School and a 1939 graduate of Sheboygan County Teacher College. On February 21, 1941, she married Calvin Schaap in Oostburg. Calvin preceded her in death on October 8, 2003. Jean taught school at Terry Andre School and Lakeview School for several years. Jean was a member of First Christian Reformed Church in Oostburg, where she was active in the choir, as a Sunday school teacher, and the Ladies Group. She enjoyed playing the piano, Bible study, and wintering in Florida. Jean is survived by her two daughters, Judith (Darrell) Hoffmann of Oostburg and Gail (Larry) Kooi of Ringgold, GA; her son, James (Barbara) Schaap of Alton, IA; eleven grandchildren, Nancy (Dan) Smits, Joel (Kass) Hoffmann, Kristin (Tom) DeBruine, Karen (Kyle) Heuver, Jonathan (Erin) Hoffmann, Nathan (Sara) Hoffmann, Michael Kooi, Heidi (Justin) Dierking, James (Tracy) Kooi, Andrea (Piet) Westerbeek, and David (Kristina) Schaap; 20 great-grandchildren; two great-great-granddaughters; and two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Dirkse of Sheboygan and Mary Nell Schaap of Colorado. Jean was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Calvin, one sister, Gertrude Dirkse, and one brother, Allan H. Dirkse. Funeral services to celebrate Jean's life will be held at 10:30 am on Thursday, November 21, 2013 at First Christian Reformed Church in Oostburg with Rev. Tom Pettinga officiating. Burial will take place in Hartman Cemetery in the Town of Wilson. Relatives and friends may call at the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg on Wednesday from 5-7 pm and on Thursday, at church, from 9:30 am until the time of the service at 10:30 am. A memorial fund has been established in Jean's name for Oostburg Christian School.
