James Kaat

James E. Kaat, 62, of N2758 Hopeman Heights, Hingham, died peacefully on Saturday morning, May 30, 2009 at the Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice in Sheboygan Falls. Jim was born on October 30, 1946 in Sheboygan, the son of Edward and the late Evelyn (Oonk) Kaat. He graduated from Oostburg High School in 1964 and served in the US Air Force in Viet Nam. On August 29, 1970 he married the former Donna Edler in Hingham. Jim worked as a police officer for the Kohler Police Dept and the Sheboygan County Sheriff Dept. He also drove truck for Dutchland Plastics and the Kohler Co. He was a member of Saron United Church of Christ. Jim sponsored the #15 Kaat Racing Team, and enjoyed all sports, yard work, traveling, driving his Cadillac, listening to Elvis Presley and having coffee with his friends at the Knotty Pine. He was fond of his cat, "Buffy James" and cherished the time he could spend with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Donna, of Hingham; two daughters, Brenda (Tim) Veldboom of Oostburg and Diana (Steve) Schukow of Howards Grove; one son, Brian (Kelly) Kaat of Plymouth; nine grandchildren, Dustin, Devin, Brianna, and Braeden Veldboom, Ashley, Dylan, and Amber Schukow, Derek and Ereka Kaat; his father, Edward (June) Kaat of Plymouth; one sister, Ruth Ann Schreurs of Oostburg; three sisters-in-law, JoAnn Frary of Michigan, Marlene Malzahn of Howards Grove, and Delores Edler of Sheboygan; three brothers-in-law, Gary (Gloria) Edler of Glenbeulah, Steven (Joan) Edler of Sheboygan, Richard Edler of Waldo. Jim is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Jim was preceded in death by his mother, Evelyn Kaat and his mother-in-law, a brother-in-law, Ron Malzahn, and two nephews. A celebration of Jim's life will be held at 7 pm on Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg with the Rev. Kathryn Kuhn officiating. Military Honors will follow. Entombment will take place at the Gardens of Peace Mausoleum in the Town of Sheboygan on Thursday at 10 am. Friends may greet the family at the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg on Wednesday from 3 pm until the time of the service. The Kaat family would like to extend their thanks and appreciation to Rev. Kathryn Kuhn of Saron United Church of Christ, the staffs on the 4th and 5th floor of St. Nicholas Hospital, and the Sharon S.
