Jacob J. Verhelst, Jr., 90, of Oostburg, passed away on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at his home with his family by his side. Jacob was born on April 13, 1925 in Oostburg to Jacob J. and Alice (Hartman) Verhelst, Sr. Jacob was a 1942 graduate of Oostburg High School. From 1944-45 Jacob served his country in the United States Army, in Company A, 407th Regiment, 102nd Division on a 5 man Machine Gun Squad in Germany. He met the love of his life, Tanya Grintchuk, in Munich, Germany at the end of WWII and they were married on July 6, 1946 in Oostburg. Jacob was a partner in Kool Kitchen Gas Co and later formed Verhelst Realty. He also served 3 terms on the County Board. Jacob was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Oostburg where he served as Deacon, Trustee and Elder. He was a member of the Hartman Lamers Post 286 in Oostburg, where he served as Commander for 2 terms. Jacob helped organize the Pine Beach Boat Club, Oostburg Golf League, Greater Oostburg Open, Kiwanis Club, Area United Fund, Historical Society and Heritage Days. He also served on the Oostburg School Board and 2 construction projects. In his free time Jacob enjoyed hunting and fishing. Jacob is survived by his wife of 68 years, Tanya; one daughter, Natalie (Michael) Prinsen of Cedar Grove; one son, James Verhelst of Oostburg; 5 grandchildren, Andrew (Sarah) Prinsen, John (Angela) Prinsen, Alicia (Charles) Stollberg, Brian (Michelle) Verhelst and Kyle Verhelst; 4 great-grandchildren, Claire, Cameron, Isla and Abby; 2 sisters, Estelle " Sally" Harmelink and Phyllis Christian. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers and 2 sisters. A funeral service to celebrate Jacob's life will be on Friday, May 1, 2015 at 11:30 am at First Presbyterian Church in Oostburg with Rev. Brian Jacobson officiating. Burial will be at Hartman Cemetery with Military Honors. Relatives and friends may greet the family on Thursday, April 30, 2015 from 4-7pm at First Presbyterian Church in Oostburg and again on Friday from 10:30am until the time of service at 11:30. A memorial fund is being established in Jacob's name.
