Howard Veldhorst

Howard L. Veldhorst, 74, of 522 Erie Avenue, Oostburg, passed away on Thursday evening, August 26, 2010 at Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital in Wauwatosa. Howard was born on March 22, 1936 in the Town of Holland, son of Willard and Eunice (Harmelink) Veldhorst. He was a 1954 graduate of Cedar Grove High School. He served in the US Army from 1956-58. On August 11, 1961 he married Helen Holle in Oostburg. Howard was employed as Vice President of National Sales Accounts with the Vollrath Co. for 36 years until his retirement in 1998. During his retirement, he served as a Funeral Assistant for the Wenig Funeral Homes and a courier for Oostburg State Bank. Howard was an active and devoted member of Bethel Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Oostburg where he served in many capacities including the choir, men's chorus, Sunday School teacher, elder, the Chex board and MERF board. He was a member of the Oostburg Kiwanis Club, Oostburg Civic Pride, and the Vollrath Quarter Century Club. He was past member of the Sheboygan County Board. Howard was a past member and president of Oostburg Christian School board. Those who knew Howard were blessed by his presence and friendship. He had a genuine love for people. Howard was an encourager to many people who always looked for the good in them. He often remarked to "look for the good and then praise it." He encouraged his family and friends "to do your very best...that in itself is good enough." He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many people. Howard especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, golf, working in his yard, entertaining, visiting the sick and shut-ins, and travel. Howard is survived by his wife of 49 years, Helen; two daughters, Brenda (Jeff) Lammers of Oostburg and Sandy (Ryan) Gartman of Oostburg; one son Rev. David (Jan) Veldhorst of Bangkok, Thailand; ten grandchildren, Austin and Kayla Lammers, Allison, Lucas and Jocelyn Gartman, James, Katy, Jonathan, Rebekah and Nicolas Veldhorst; two sisters, Dorothy (Glenn) Jensema of Oostburg and Doris (Robert) DeSmidt of Cedar Grove and one brother, Wesley (Alyce) Veldhorst of Cedar Grove. Howard was preceded in death by his parents, Willard and Eunice Veldhorst; three grandsons, Alex, Sean and Jacob Lammers; an infant brother, Gerald Veldhorst; and his parents-in-law, Audley and Marie Holle. A celebration of Howard's life will be held on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at 6 pm at Bethel OPC in Oostburg with the Revs. John Tinsley, James Bosgraf, and David Veldhorst officiating. Private family burial will take place at the Oostburg Cemetery prior to the service on Tuesday morning. Relatives and friends may greet the family at the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg on Monday from 2- 8 pm., and on Tuesday, at church, from 4 pm until the time of the service at 6 pm. A memorial fund has been established in Howard's name for Oostburg Christian School and the New Community Mission in Thailand.
