Howard VanEss

Howard S. VanEss, 89, of 119 South 11th Street, Apt 108, Oostburg peacefully went home to his Lord with his family at his side on Wednesday night, December 23, 2009 at the Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice Center in Sheboygan Falls. Howard was born on September 21, 1920 in the Town of Holland, the son of the late John and Mary (Theune) VanEss. He attended Lakeview School. On December 12, 1941 he married Sue Ann Lammers in Oostburg. Howard worked as a manager at Oostburg Lumber and Grain Co. and the Wagner Home Center in Haven before his retirement in 1981. He was a longtime and active member at the First Reformed Church in Oostburg where he served as deacon, and custodian from 1960 until 1996. Howard was a regular viewer of the various church services held throughout the community on Channel 14. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, jig saw puzzles, and watching his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren participate in their church and school activities. He cherished the times he could spend with his family. Howard is survived by his wife of 68 years, Sue Ann; one daughter, Judy (Wayne) Meerdink; one son, Jack (Jody) VanEss; a daughter-in-law, Janice VanEss, all of Oostburg; ten grandchildren, Sherry (Tom) Beuhler, Lori (Randy) Huibregtse, Shelly (Tim) Kaat, Jeff (Nicole) Meerdink, Jon (Kami), Jay (Jill), Justin (Tracy), Jordan (Shannon) VanEss, Courtney and Lindsey VanEss; 17 great grandchildren; one great great granddaughter; three sisters, Janet Bloemers of Pine Haven Christian Home, Lenore LeMahieu, and Margaret (Erwin) Hendrikse, both of Oostburg; one brother, Lloyd (Dorothy) VanEss of Waupun; four sisters-in-law, Nelda VanEss, Donna VanEss, Helen VanEss, and Arline Lammers, all of Oostburg; nieces, nephews and friends. Howard was preceded in death by his son, Kenneth VanEss; a sister, Lauretta (Allan) TeStroote; four brothers, Isaac (Esther), James, Robert and Carl VanEss; two sisters-in-law, Doris VanEss and Eunice (George) Joosse; and three brothers-in-law, Lewis LeMahieu, Lester Bloemers, Eugene (Marjorie) Lammers and LeRoy Lammers. Memorial services will be held at 11 am on Monday, December 28, 2009 at the First Reformed Church in Oostburg with the Rev. Brian Taylor officiating. A family service will precede at 10:45 am in the fellowship hall. Friends may greet the family at the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg on Sunday from 2-6 pm, and at church, on Monday from 10 am until the time of the service at 11am.
