Hazel F. (Claerbout) Vande Wall ,93, of Cedar Grove, went home to her Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, July 22, 2017 at Pine Haven Christian Home in Sheboygan Falls. Hazel was born on March 27, 1924, on a farm outside Sheboygan Falls, to Oscar and Alice (DeSmidt) Claerbout. She graduated from Cedar Grove High School in 1942, then served an apprenticeship at Claerbout's Beauty Shop in Sheboygan Falls, earning a WI license in cosmetology. She attended Calvin College for 2 yrs. On Aug 18, 1945, a few weeks after Phillip Vande Wall's release from the U.S. Army, they were married. Hazel was active in the First Reformed Church of Cedar Grove, teaching Bible Class and Sunday School for over 20 yrs, as well as serving as Secretary/Treasure of the Mary-Esther Circle for many years. For eight years she went on a week's mission trip to the Other Way in Grand Rapids, MI. She was also active in the Oostburg Christian School Circle and Guild while her three children completed their 8 yrs of elementary education there. Hazel was employed for 13 years in the purchasing and inventory departments of Citizen's Bank of Sheboygan. The years prior to that, she was "on-call" at Vande Wall's Grocery, as were the children, who in their teen years could relieve their parents for a rare vacation away from the family business. Hazel enjoyed entertaining and cooking for her family and friends, and for mission guests and visitors to the Reformed Church. She especially loved spending time along Lake Michigan at the family cottage. Her hobbies included sewing, flower gardening, xc skiing, and playing games like pinochle and dominoes. She was well known for her card and note writing to family, friends, her church community and beyond. Hazel was surprised on her 93rd birthday with a very special tribute. On March 27, 2017. A baby girl was born in Anchorage, Alaska and was named after her. Hazel Mae was born to Anna and Mike Forbes. Anna (nee Herzog) and Hazel were prayer partners through the First Reformed Church for many years and still kept in touch. Hazel is survived by her 3 children, Lee (Linda) Vande Wall of Cedar Grove, Anne (Paul) Koeppe of Cross Plains, WI, Mary (Al) Mills Koch of Oostburg, WI; 7 grandchildren, Dr.Holly (Brian Watkins) Vande Wall of Boston, Erica (James) Wagoner of Cross Plains, WI, Jason (Nikki) Mills of Hingham, Amber (Ken) Johnson of Fishers, IN, Luke (Krystle) Mills of Oostburg, Jim (Kivi) Koeppe of Middleton, WI, and Sam Koeppe of Cross Plains, WI; 11 great grandchildren, Caleb, Levi and Malachi Mills, Makenzee, Kenley, and Deaken Johnson, Ellodie, Blayke, and Bowen Mills, Chloe and Max Koeppe, and Jamie Wagoner; two sisters Betty (Curt) Nyenhuis of Oostburg, WI, Bev (John) Dees of Crown Point, IN, a brother-in law Richard (Janna) Soerens of Howards Grove, WI, sister-in-law Nancy Claerbout of CO, and many nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews. Hazel was preceded in death by her husband of 57 yrs, Phillip Vande Wall and his 3 sisters and brother-in-laws, Bonnie (Eugene) Wissink, Ruth (Robert) Bruggink, Phyllis Van Der Wal; her 2 sisters Mary (Richard) Soerens, and Irene (Howard) Klug; brother Bill Claerbout, baby brother, Oscar Stanley; her son-in-law Jim Mills, niece Kim Dees, and nephew Greg Richardson. A funeral service to celebrate Hazel's life will take place at 10am on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 at First Reformed Church in Cedar Grove, with Jason Croatt officiating. Burial will be at Cedar Grove Cemetery. Relatives and friends may greet the family on Monday, July 24, 2017 at the First Reformed Church in Cedar Grove from 4-7pm and again on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 at the church from 9am until the time of service at 10am. A memorial fund to Pine Haven Christian Home and JDRF, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is being established in Hazel's memory.
