Harvey VanEss

November 22, 1919 — February 14, 2010

Harvey J. Van Ess, 90, of Cedar Grove, passed away on Sunday, February 14, 2010 at Cedar Grove Gardens. Harvey was born on December 22, 1919 in the Town of Holland, son of the late Henry and Elizabeth (Schreurs) Van Ess. He was a 1937 graduate of Oostburg High School. On August 29, 1941 he married Gladys Schreurs in Cedar Grove. Harvey was in the US Army Air Force and served in WW II from 1945 -1946. He worked for Huth-James & Musebeck Shoe Co., Ebbers Hardware, and was a self-employed heating contractor for 24 years. He then worked for J.C.Penneys for 5 years retiring in 1985. Harvey was a member of First Reformed Church in Cedar Grove where he served as an elder and a deacon. He served on two building committees and was a maintenance volunteer for many years. Harvey also served on the Cedar Grove Village Board and was President for two terms. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #338 in Cedar Grove. Harvey enjoyed woodworking in his spare time. Survivors include his wife, Gladys; his daughter, Zella (Dale) Wilterdink of Oostburg; his son, Donald K. Van Ess of Oostburg; two brothers, Philip (Lois) Van Ess of Cedar Grove and Roger (Sue) Van Ess of Cedar Grove; three grandchildren, Sara (Dan) TenPas, Rachel (Keven) Sprehe, and Esther (Pradeep) Patel; five great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Beatrice Van Ess of Plymouth. Harvey was preceded in death by his parents, one great-grandson Ethan Sprehe, one sister, Alvina Van Ess, and his brother, Irvin Van Ess. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 17, 2010 at First Reformed Church in Cedar Grove with the Rev. Kent Vant Hul officiating. Burial will take place in Cedar Grove Cemetery with military honors conducted by the VFW Post #9156-Sheboygan. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday (today) at First Reformed Church in Cedar Grove. A memorial fund has been established in Harvey's name for First Reformed Church in Cedar Grove and the St. Nicholas Hospital Hospice.
