Harvey O. Richter, 97, of Kohler, died on Friday evening, February 19, 2010, at the Rocky Knoll Health Care Center where he had resided for the past two years. Harvey was born on January 5, 1913, in Kohler, the son of the late Max and Ella (Schumann) Richter. He graduated from Kohler High School in 1930. He served in the US Army National Guard for two years from 1934-35. On May 11, 1935, he married the late Ruth M. Kuehlman in Kohler. Harvey and Ruth were married for 69 years prior to her death in 2004. Harvey was an analytical chemist for the Kohler Co. for 46 years before his retirement in 1976. He also worked as a part-time recreation director for the Village of Kohler until 1955. Harvey was a lifelong and very active member at Bethany Lutheran Church in Kohler and a proud member of the Kohler Fire Department. Harvey was a very athletic individual. He was an avid and skilled bowler and a lifetime member of the Bowler Hall of Fame. He started the first youth bowling program in Sheboygan County in 1944 and was a bowling instructor for junior bowlers for 41 years. In 1949 he started the youth bowling program in Sheboygan. He especially loved teaching and coaching others. He participated in league bowling for over 73 years with an all time average of 190. He also started the Lakeshore Pee Wee baseball program in 1945, which he also coached for 10 years, as well as coaching Kohler American Legion, Kohler High School, and Kohler Greyhounds baseball teams. He was also a member of the Old Timers Baseball Club. Harvey was an avid Milwaukee Brewer and Green Bay Packer fan. He never forgave the Cubs for trading Rogers Hornsby. Harvey was published and well known for his flourishing and abundant produce gardens. Harvey is survived by a daughter, Patricia (Richard) Schoening of Sheboygan; a son, Paul (Kathleen) Richter of Sheboygan Falls; twelve grandchildren, Michael (Melissa) Ploeckelman, Tim Ploeckelman, Julie (Paul) Thiessen, Kim Beers, Michael Schoening, Dawn (Jim) Schlegel, Paige Kiernan, Shannon (Kori), Travis, Jason (Teri), Christopher (Sarah), and Eric (Stefanie) Richter; 22 great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; one sister, Leilah (Roland) Knabe; and one brother, Elroy (Dorothy and Hilda) Richter. Funeral services will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church in Kohler at 6 pm on Tuesday, February 23, 2010, with the Rev. Robert Steele officiating. Burial will take place at Woodland Cemetery in Kohler. Friends may call at the church on Tuesday from 4 pm until the time of the service.
