Harriet M. DeSmith, 81, of Oostburg died on Friday night, October 7, 2016 at Pine Haven Christian Home in Sheboygan Falls where she had reside for the past two years.. Harriet was born on November 19, 1934 in the Town of Holland, the daughter of Harry and Mabel (Meinen) Weakamp. Harriet graduated from Oostburg High School in 1952 and then attended the Sheboygan Business College. On May 21, 1960 she married Audley DeSmith in the Town of Holland. Audley preceded her in death on May 21, 1999 following 39 years of marriage. Harriet worked at Dutchland Plastics in Oostburg for 28 years before her retirement in 1999. Previously she worked at Curt G. Joa and Thomas Industries for several years. Harriet was a devoted lifelong member of Bethel Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Oostburg, sang in the choir, attended the Rebekah Society events and the Senior Saints. She was also a member of the Oostburg Christian School Circle and cleaned homes for other people. She enjoyed reading, traveling, singing and playing piano. Harriet cherished her three grandsons and the time she spent with them. Harriet is survived by three sons, Dale (Lori) DeSmith of the Town of Lima, Steve DeSmith of Sheboygan and Dan (Kari) DeSmith of Oostburg; three grandchildren, Devin, Trevor and Collin DeSmith; one sister, Genevieve (Robert) Weavers of New Berlin; three sisters-in-law, Mary DeSmith of Michigan, Muriel "Murt" DeSmith of Iowa, Donna DeSmith of Oostburg; a brother-in-law, Allan Risseeuw of Cedar Grove; nieces and nephews. Harriet was preceded in death by her husband, Audley; two sisters-in-law, Delores "Peg" (Paul) Harmeling, and Judy Risseeuw; and four brothers-in-law, Eugene (Liz), Robert, Roger, and Gary DeSmith. A funeral to celebrate Harriet's life will take place at Bethel OPC on Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at 11 am with Rev. John Tinsley officiating. Burial will follow at Oostburg Cemetery in the Town of Holland. Family and friends will gather at the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg on Tuesday from 4-7pm, and on Wednesday, at church, from 10 am until the time of the service at 11 am.
