Gudrun Bartels

Gudrun J. Bartels, 91, formerly of 2532 N. 7th St., Sheboygan, died peacefully in the arms of her daughter and caregiver, Kristina, on Sunday, September 18, 2011, at her home in Camarillo, California, where she had been residing for the past eight years. Gudrun was born on January 24, 1920, in Silesia, Germany, to Karl and Flora Welz. She was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother. As a teenager, she excelled in sports, particularly in track, swimming, and life-saving, for which she was awarded the prestigious national sports medal in bronze. She went on to become a teacher and counselor at a national orphanage for children who lost their parents in the war. In 1943, she met and married Kurt G. Bartels, a staff sergeant in the Air Force. Their son, Dr. Ingo K. and daughter, Kristina, were born prior to their immigration to Sheboygan, in the fall of 1953. A second son, Ulrich J. was born here in 1959. Her husband preceded her in death on Father's Day, 1984. Gudrun is survived by her three children; Dr. Ingo K. Bartels of Sheboygan, Kristina (Roald) Olson of Camarillo, California and Ulrich (special friend Shelly Ramminger) Bartels of Sheboygan Falls. Gudrun is also survived by five grandchildren, Eric, Lynda and Michael Olson in Camarillo, California and Julie (Mark) Wilkening in Maryland and Derek Bartels in Sheboygan Falls. A private funeral service to celebrate Gudrun's life will be held on Saturday, September 24, 2011 at 11:00 am at the Chapel of Eternal Light at Greenlawn Memorial Park in the Town of Sheboygan. Entombment will take place in Garden of Peace Mausoleum. Gudrun will always be remembered for her caring, friendly nature, and for always being there when friends and family needed encouragement and a helping hand. We'll miss you, mom.
