Gladys Ess

Gladys L. Van Ess, 95, of Cedar Grove, passed away on Tuesday, July 26, 2011, at Cedar Grove Gardens. Gladys was born on December 12, 1915 in St. Croix County, WI, daughter of Henry and Katie (De Smidt) Schreurs. She was a 1935 graduate of the Wisconsin Memorial Academy in Cedar Grove. On August 29, 1941, she married Harvey Van Ess in Cedar Grove. Harvey preceded her in death on February 14, 2010. Gladys worked part-time at Musebeck Shoe Company and the Canning Factory in Cedar Grove. Gladys was a member of First Reformed Church in Cedar Grove, where she was active in the Ladies Aid. Gladys loved spending time with her family. She enjoyed crocheting, reading and gardening. Gladys is survived by her daughter, Zella (Dale) Wilterdink of Oostburg; her son Donald K. Van Ess of Oostburg; three grandchildren, Sara (Dan) Ten Pas, Rachel (Keven) Sprehe and Esther (Pradeep) Patel; five great-grandchildren, John, Elizabeth, Anna, Megan, Abigail; two brothers-in-law, Philip (Lois) Van Ess of Cedar Grove and Roger (Sue) Van Ess of Cedar Grove; and one sister-in-law, Beatrice Van Ess of Plymouth; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Gladys was preceded in death by her: parents; husband Harvey; one great-grandson Ethan; sister-in-law Alvina Van Ess; brother-in-law Irvin Van Ess. Funeral Services to celebrate Gladys' life will be at 5:00 pm on Thursday, July 28, 2011, at First Reformed Church in Cedar Grove with Rev. Kent Vant Hul officiating. Interment will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call from 3:00 pm until the time of the service Thursday at the church. A memorial fund has been established in Gladys' name for First Reformed Church of Cedar Grove and St. Nicholas Home Hospice.
