Gerald Katsma

Gerald Katsma, 83, of Oostburg. died on Friday afternoon, February 26, 2016 at the Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice where he had resided for the past four days. Gerald was born on September 25, 1932 in Randolph, the son of Samuel and Mary (Kuik) Katsma. He attended area schools in Randolph. Gerald served with the US Army in Korea following the Korean Conflict from 1953-55. On November 17, 1962 he married Pauline Schreurs in Oostburg. She preceded him in death on December 19, 2012 following 50 years of marriage. Gerald worked in the warehouse for the Kohler Co. for 39 years prior to his retirement in 1995. Gerald was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Oostburg where he served as an usher. He was also a member of the Oostburg Kiwanis Club and the Kohler Quarter Century Club. He enjoyed fishing, boating, traveling, spending time at the cottage on Lake Michigan, cars, and tinkering in his garage. He cherished the time he could spend with his family. Gerald is survived by three daughters, Mary Jo (Phil) VanTatenhove of Gibbsville, Julie (Kurt) Wisse of Oostburg, and Lana (Joel) TenDolle of Hingham; eight grandchildren, Mallory (Coulter) Nyenhuis, Megan, Samuel, and Madison VanTatenhove, April (Luke) Launer, Brandon and Erin Wisse, and Justin TenDolle; one great granddaughter, Aubrey Jo Launer; five sisters, Katie Boorsma, Elsie Winkel, both of Waupun, Dorothy Leystra, Evelyn VanderGalien of Friesland and Carol Moat of Oregon; two brothers, Clarence (Gertie) Katsma and Dewey Katsma, both of Friesland; three sisters-in-law, Dorothy (Carl) Blok of Oostburg, Charlene Schreurs of Oostburg, Doris (Larry) Wieberdink of Cedar Grove; three brothers-in-law, Sebert Kooima of Iowa, Myles (Karen) Schreurs and Don (Jean) Schreurs, both of Cedar Grove; nieces and nephews. Gerald was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline; a granddaughter, Lindsey TenDolle; three sisters, Jennie Westra, Gertie Slager and Ann Kooima; one brother, Theodore Katsma. A funeral to celebrate Gerald's life will take place at the First Christian Reformed Church in Oostburg at 6 pm on Monday, February 29, 2016 with the Rev. Drew Zylstra officiating. Burial will take place at the Union Cemetery in the Town of Holland. Family and friends will gather at the First Christian Reformed Church in Oostburg on Monday from 3pm until the time of the service at 6 pm.
