George A. Mehring, 87, of 425 Church St., Kohler, died Monday, April 16, 2007 at his home. He was born March 29, 1920 in Sheboygan, the son of the late George and Viola (Ehlke) Mehring. George was a 1938 graduate of Kohler High School and then served in the U.S. Army from 1942-46. On October 24, 1946 he married Eleanor Ruth Ochs in Montague,MI. George was an assistant traffic manager at Kohler Company for 44 years. He was a member of Grace United Church of Christ in Kohler where he served 2 terms on consistory and 30 years as treasurer. George attended Sunday school and church since it was chartered in 1924. George was a charter member and past president of Kohler Police Athletic League, Kohler Kiwanis Club, and Sheboygan Transportation Association where he served as Secretary-Treasurer for 16 years, Kohler Quarter Century Club, and Big Brothers. He enjoyed gardening, traveling to Europe and England when Eleanor researched and wrote four genealogy books on our families. He was a loyal Cubs fan and Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Bucks supporter. As a member of Big Brothers of Sheboygan, he had the honor of mentoring Loren Erickson. They had the longest association in the state of Wisconsin (11 years) at that time. Survivors include his wife, Eleanor Ruth; five daughters, Ann (Lee) Schomberg of Grand Rapids, MI, Cathy (Don) Mouney of River Ridge, LA, Sarah (Howard) Higgins of Big Spring, TX, Beth (Dr. George) Colclough of Lexington, KY, Barbara (George) Hagemann of St. Louis Park, MN; grandchildren, Matt and Chris Schomberg, Allison and Lauren Mouney, Shannon Higgins, Ben, Emily and Eleanor Colclough. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother and sister, Louise Rumney. A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 20, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at Grace United Church of Christ with the Rev. Tom Schroeder, pastor, officiating. Inurnment will take place at Woodland Cemetery in Kohler. Friends may call at the church on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services. A memorial fund will be established in his name for Grace United Church of Christ.
