Gary A. Scholten, 71, of Oostburg, passed away on Wednesday evening, August 17, 2016, at his home while surrounded by his family and friends following his courageous battle with cancer. Gary was born on February 13, 1945, in Sheboygan, the son of Gordon and Lillian (Back) Scholten. Gary graduated from Oostburg High School in 1963 and then attended Lakeshore Technical Institute in Sheboygan where he obtained a degree in mechanics. On June 1, 1968 he married Barbara Perronne in Sheboygan Falls. Gary worked as a mechanic at Bachmann Implement for 10 years prior to becoming a dairy farmer producing milk for Gibbsville Cheese. Gary also enjoyed driving school bus for Otte Bus Service for 30 years. Gary owned his own machinery repair business, Century Lane Services, and specialized in repairing two cylinder tractors. Gary was a lifelong member of Gibbsville Reformed Church, Sheboygan County Farm Bureau, and served as a 4-H leader for 51 years where he taught the countywide tractor project and was a rabbit superintendent. He was a founding member of the Lakeshore Two Cylinder Club where he gave tech tips to the members at their monthly meetings. Gary enjoyed fishing, playing with the grandkids and farming with his brother, Ralph. Gary was also a member of various other tractor clubs, enjoyed antiques and was an avid toy tractor collector. Gary is survived by his wife of 48 years, Barbara; his two daughters, Michele (Ross) Rate of Random Lake and Deanne (John) Larson of Plymouth; two sons, Mark (Tina Weinand) Scholten of Sheboygan Falls and Luke (Alison) Scholten of Oostburg ; nine grandchildren, Amanda Fenner, Lyndsay Fenner, Magnus Larson, Josie Larson, MaKenna Weinand, Gunnar Larson, Madison Scholten, Brandie Scholten, and Brooke Scholten; one sister, Laura (Steve) Dulmes of Hingham; two brothers, Dan (Sara) Scholten of Rhinelander and Ralph Scholten of Oostburg; his father-in-law, Harold Perronne of Sheboygan Falls; a sister-in-law, Pat (Gary) Thede of Sheboygan Falls; two brothers-in-law, John and Dan Perronne of Sheboygan Falls; an aunt, Elda Veldboom of Plymouth; other nieces, nephew, relatives, friends, and his favorite dog, Shorty. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, a sister-in-law, Susan Scholten; mother-in-law, Marilyn Perronne; uncles, John (Mabel) Back and Henry (Lucille) Back; an aunt, Margaret Back; and an uncle-in-law, Oscar Veldboom. Funeral services to celebrate Gary's life will be held at 11 am on Monday, August 22, 2016 at Gibbsville Reformed Church with Rev. Gerald Dykstra officiating. Gary will be laid to rest at Gibbsville Cemetery in the Town of Lima. Family and friends may gather at the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg on Sunday from 3-7 pm, and on Monday, at church, from 9 am until the time of the service. A memorial fund has been established in Gary's name for the Sheboygan County 4-H Alumni Association.
